This is the 5th book in Julie James' FBI/US Attorney series. I have been a fan of every book, but this was my favorite. FBI agent Vaughn Roberts and PE Director Sidney Sinclair were my favorite couple in a series of couples I loved.

Sidney caught her fiancee cheating days before her wedding and was devastated. An opportunity to leave NYC and move to her hometown, Chicago, arose at just the right time and she returned professionally triumphant and personally an object of pity just in time for her little sister to get engaged to a man with a very sexy older brother. That brother has much to recommend him, but also a policy of never getting serious with a woman. (At one point Sidney refers to him as a "man about town." He laughs and asks if people still use that term and Sidney says she was trying to find
a diplomatic alternative to "manwhore.") Sidney though is focused on the golden ring. Still, she is up for a Mr. Right Now until she identifies her Mr. Right and the duo plunges into secret hookups and, shockingly, become friends. That is when things start to get sticky.

This was smart and funny and sexy and I smiled all the way through.

Listening in on a really bad first date, Vaughan can’t help but be impressed when the unknown female quickly and honestly lets the guy down. Perfect time to hit on her, right? Wrong. Sidney has had it with smokin’ hot, cocky and arrogant men and Vaughan has all these characteristics in spades. She shuts him down faster than a cowboy lassos a helpless calf and heads out to meet her sister and her boyfriend only to find out two things. Her sister is getting married and who is her fiance’s brother and best man? Oh, look-Vaughan just walked in the door.

Yeah, ok. I know that sounds like a lot of romances but what Julie James offers to romance readers is a little bit different while still being true to the genre. Smart and witty characters with quirky side characters. The sexual tension seems to come naturally from humor and snark which is always fun.

We've gotten to know Special Agent Vaughn Roberts as a side character in previous books. He's a good looking FBI agent who knows the draw he has on women and he's enjoying every bit of it. Vaughn is your typical commitment phobe man who doesn't see why he would confine himself to one woman when there are so many out there to enjoy.

Investment banker Sidney Sinclair just came off a very bad breakup when she found out her fiance was cheating on her three weeks before their wedding. His excuse was he panicked about the commitment. As you can imagine, Vaughn would be the last guy she needs in her life after that. These two are constantly thrown together since Sidney's sister is marrying Vaughn's brother.

I gotta say, this is one of those books where the last half made all the difference for me. At first, I didn't think very highly of Vaughn and his way of thinking. He didn't want to be judged for not wanting to commit and yet I felt like he judged Sidney because she did want that. Between that and the bickering back and forth, I was glad to see the dynamic change between these two.

Once Sidney and Vaughn gave into their mutual attraction, the more I really enjoyed their story. By the end I was hooked. While this may not have been my favorite way for a couple to start out, I was very much entertained throughout the book.

It was interesting that neither of the main characters' career plot lines ever quite tied into the main story. It gave a better picture of the characters and their motivations, but I kept waiting for someone in Sidney's office to run afoul of the FBI white collar unit.

Short review.

Rating~ 3.5 stars.

Every year around the summer time I wait for Julie James books because they are humorous, sexy, witty, romantic and just plain fun to read.

This book was ALL of that. BUT:

Minor quibbles: This time around Julie did say it was going to be different and it was. It did have less action compared to the previous books and maybe that's why i liked it less than the others. It could also be because while I liked Sidney i didn't love her like I did Julie's other heroines maybe it was because she came on so hard on Vaughn and was judgmental I don't know. The book could have also used an epilogue or something since it felt rushed at end, everything came together so quickly and neatly.

(This review may be mainly the prosecco talking)Le sigh - so good! Grown-up characters who TALK to one another (most of the time), a heroine who is uber good at her job and isn't afraid to show it, wicked humor and so much heart ... so many Good Book Noises. Thanks to the ladies at SBTB for piquing my interest in this one, even though I "don't read" contemp romance. This might be headed for a place on my comfort shelf.

Another great romance from Julie James. I really liked how fiery Sidney was, in putting Vaughn in his place. Their banter and growing friendship hooked me in. The side characters all were interesting and entertaining too. Loved the bonding at the bachelor/bachelorette party. The Chicago setting was good too. I'd love for someone to do something similar with Boston as a backdrop.
