Have you ever read a book and had it completely surprise you? That was this for me. I don't know what I expected when I picked it up, probably thinking it was going to be another book that "almost" did something important but didn't quite get to the root and cover all the dimensions surrounding the issue, or it would be another story that oversimplified something so completely but sprinkled in all the right terminology that the whole thing feels like a "cash grab" (you know the books I'm describing), but when I finished reading this aloud to my daughter, I remember thinking..."WOW, this is EXACTLY what I have been searching for (but didn't realize I had been searching for)!" I wish I had had this book when I was growing up. The phrasing, illustrations, diversity, and depth are truly perfect.

Five bright and shining stars for this feel good book that reminds us all that happiness is not an “if/when” scenario, but rather a “right now” experience. Yes, please.

You know, this one surprised me. I very much thought "Oh, sure, another book that harps on about choosing to be happy. It's not always that easy. Some people can't just choose happiness." And then, there was the shift. Sometimes, you'll just be sad, and have feelings, and that's okay! But you can ride it out until happy is possible again. Surrounding yourself with a balance of love, solitude, play, and mindfulness can help ease the worry and hurt. Meditation is a beautiful thing, too, and a theme I'm seeing more of lately in picture books.

What a lovely reminder that we can choose how we respond to a moment and—importantly!—that it is OK to be unhappy.

Such a wonderful message about embracing the positivity in all moments and being "happy right now," instead of dwelling on the negative.
