If Unwritten were a movie franchise, the first five volumes would make up the first film, and this volume, by itself, would be the sequel. So many questions answered in interesting ways. Several different origin stories for characters from the first film, and characters who will be important further down the line. A climatic fight scene. Wars. Blood. Violence. Purpose.

This is the only volume of the series that could, conceivably stand on its own. But you'd want more, so it's convenient that there are ten more volume, and a side story.

This book is also paced differently. Instead of presenting you with a main story, and either a prelude issue, or a side story at the end, the one major story throughout is broken up by the various origin stories. And it fits together really well.

I recommend this for anyone who enjoys the literary canon, HarryPotterfiles, or nyone who loves reading but isn't sure how they feel about whales.

I think maybe this is one of those series that will require a re-read to appreciate. Though perhaps like my last try at Preacher, a re-read could be hard. This volume goes in pretty deep. And there is what should be a huge change in the plot after this. It also ends with an add-on story that shows us the inside of The Grid and ends again with what should be a big change. There is at least one death? in this one that could be annoying. But the whole thing left me with a "what the heck was that". I guess I'll see. 3.5 of 5.

This is the best graphic novel series since Sandman. Absolutely mind blowing. I haven't found myself aching for each issues release so intensely since my teenage years. Carey and Ross are beyond brilliant.

Pretty epic things happen in this volume. I was torn over whether to give it three or four stars, though, because between each chapter of Tommy Taylor and the War of Words is a side-story told through Wilson Taylor's journal that explores the beginnings of the grid and the secret council. These side stories are good and interesting.... but it got a little annoying because really major things were happening with the main characters, and I wanted to know what happened! It was still a good volume, though, so I went with four stars.

Each volume I read immediately becomes my favorite. The payoff has been so good and this isn't even over yet. This is the volume where you FINALLY get an exposition about the cabal, Wilson/Tom, and how the mechanics of the world work. Knowing that this is here makes the whole series a lot more readable and definitely sets it up for a great re-read.
