It's hard to review middle books in the series. Obviously, something happened before that made you want to keep reading, and something will happen after that you're hoping to get to the resolution to. I will say though, this one was a strong middle book, able to carry the plot and add intrigue. So much so, I immediately had to purchase the next one and start reading it as I couldn't just stop at that point.

So well done in that regard. That being said, I'm not going to get super detailed on it, as I feel like you already know the cast of characters, I don't want to spoil any plotlines, and if you've come this far you're probably going to carry through to the end.

But overall this one was well-paced, continued character and world development, and was a solid addition to the series.

An enjoyable addition to the Codex Alera Series, [b:Cursor's Fury|29394|Cursor's Fury (Codex Alera, #3)|Jim Butcher|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1168029475s/29394.jpg|6614461] corrects some of the pacing issues I had with the two previous books in the series and shows that [a:Jim Butcher|10746|Jim Butcher|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1205261964p2/10746.jpg] is getting more comfortable writing the world of Alera. I'm excited to start the next novel because each book I've read so far has been better than the one before it. Even though I had some issues with structure and writing, from the 1st novel I've been in love with the characters, and I definitely want to see how their stories progress.

I'm a great fan of the Dresden series (I think it's one of my top 5 fantasy series I'm currently reading, and maybe of all times), so at times I think the Codex Alera series suffers in comparison. In this novel, however, I spent much less time thinking "This isn't the Dresden files", and much more time immersed in the story.

Gah, Butcher kills me with these battle/fight scenes! Seems like the whole book is plot-driven and tightly woven and then he throws in these overly detailed and extended battle scenes that just destroy the momentum for me and I find myself skimming. I did enjoy finding out for sure about Tavi's past and I will certainly read the next one, but not sure if this is one of my favorites.

Alright, that was cool. At least if you find the idea of Roman legionnaires fighting an army of seven foot tall wolf men cool.

The whole book's good but Tavi's subplot in the First Aleran Legion was best. Tavi starts out as Subtribune Logistica (basically a junior logistics officer) in the newly formed First Aleran which is apparently riddled with spies.

Shit gets real when the Canim (aforementioned wolf men from the west) invade and due to a confounding confluence of crises the rookie First Aleran is all that's available to meet them.

And once again I'm amazed at Jim Butcher's ability to really consider the potential of magic. Where most writers (I'm thinking of various D&D books) would take a bunch of guys with wind powers and make them glorified leaf blowers, Butcher takes a step back and considers what you could do by reshaping the air. Seriously cool spoiler:

And did I mention the legionnaires versus the giant wolf men? Because that's just cool.
