“…A fabulous meld of Mexican horror movies and Nazi occultism…”
I’ve enjoyed this author’s books in the past, and I enjoyed this story too. The plot was really interesting: the culture of Mexico City in the 90s mixing with old Hollywood glamour and occultism. I feel like parts of the story could have been drawn out and others shortened, but overall, I really enjoyed it. Perfect for spooky season.

I wanted to like this more than I actually liked it. The situation and setting seemed compelling, and I liked the idea of the characters, but it was all kind of flat to me. At 25% in, I considered quitting it out of boredom, but then things picked up. I still didn't find myself really caring, though. I liked the dramatic end, but not enough to truly recommend it. It's not awful, but ... that's not enough.

Honestly, I am positive that Silvia Moreno-Garcia can never disappoint me. I fell in love with her writing with Mexican Gothic, and everything since has been just as jaw dropping. This is the perfect golden age of film era with witchcraft, old age glamor, ghosts, etc. It sent chills up my spine and kept me up all night. Nothing will prepare you for this creepy horror tale crafted by the master herself.
