I have to give this 5 stars because I just love Maya Angelou and I feel like this part of her autobiography gives so much insight on the relationship with her mother in her adult life and it is absolutely heartwarming. After "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" it is hard to appreciate Vivian Baxter as a mother, because she wasn't a good one. But I loved seeing her parent Maya as an adult, and it brought so much light to the importance of a mother's love in your young adult and even older adulthood. As a mother myself, of a small toddler, it is powerful to see the impact I can have on my daughter throughout her life, if I do a good job loving her.

There were a few parts that I had already read in another of Angelou's books... However, I just enjoyed rereading them. What a life for both her and her mother!

I loved this so much. This is so honestly written and deeply personal, it felt hard not to be moved by her story. Quick and easy to read.

3.5 stars. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this autobiography or not. I remember distinctly in high school having trouble getting through "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". I felt the writing in this was much more approachable. I also enjoyed that each section felt much like little essays about motherhood, life and her own mother. Overall, an enjoyable read.

Wish I would’ve read the hard copy, instead of listening. I think I would’ve enjoyed it more. It seemed to drag a bit as an audio book.
