Enjoyable escapist fantasy novel about a girl who is half vampire.
Did there really need to be a six-page sex scene, though???

Just the kind of mystery/paranormal/romance novel I LOVE!

I'm so happy my friend Anne is doing a read-along for the Night Huntress series this year.

It's so nice to get back to the beginning of Cat and Bones. I had forgotten how funny Bones' dry humor is. Or how strong (and a little out there) Cat is. I had also totally forgotten how much I loathed Cat's mom.

Full review to come.

Reading this book is the literary equivalent of eating Taco Bell. Before you order you already know this is probably not a good idea. You throw caution to the wind and go for it, despite your reservations. You take the first bite and think “Ick, this does NOT taste the way I thought it would.” It’s not inedible. You’re here now. You spent good money on it and don’t want to be wasteful, so you eat it. The problem is that it’s just not good. The flavors are underdeveloped. The ingredients are stale. There *is something* indulgent about it, but that doesn’t actually make it good. By the time you finish your meal you feel a little icky. It’s certainly not something you recommend to anyone or even admit you ate. Alas, I’m sure I will order from (metaphorical) Taco Bell again.

Halfway to the Grave
4 Stars

Tavia Gilbert's does an exemplarily job with the various voices, however, her heavy low class British accent for Bones takes some getting used to.

Bones is an obvious carbon-copy of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (bleached blond hair, dark eyes and a British accent - really, how unoriginal can you get?). He starts out as an obnoxious, supercilious git but his swagger conceals a well-developed sense of justice and he is ultimately revealed to be a real sweetheart. Cat is a likable heroine with some great kick-ass moves but she is also naive, prejudiced and judgmental - at least she seems to realize this and makes an effort to get past it.

The real problem is that Cat and Bones's chemistry is a little meh. Yes, they have the witty banter thing going on in spades but the rapid progression of their physical relationship is somewhat disappointing - more in line with paranormal romance than urban fantasy. Yes, they have an intense spark of attraction in the beginning, but the sizzle dies out quite quickly and by the middle of the book they sound like an old married couple.

The plot gives new meaning to the term "human trafficking". It is well-developed with some truly excellent action scenes. The ending is very satisfying and I'm intrigued by the direction the story is taking with the government agency involved in investigating the paranormal - it really appeals to my inner X-File.

Overall, not the brilliant masterpiece I was expecting given the hype but it is a fun read and I look forward to seeing what happens next with Cat and Bones.

There were plenty of cute moments and some decent smut, but there just wasn’t enough character or plot development to make me want to read any more of these. At least I didn't hate myself or the author after I finished it, which is more than can be said for some of my two-star books.

Giving it 4 stars for now... I was thinking about giving it 5 stars , but I can only give five stars to the Fever series .. Nothing can top Jericho <3 ah ~

I liked this book, but didn't love it.

Some things I liked:
+The main character, Catherine, has a strong will, determination, and clarity of sight to take care of business.
+Catherine doesn't lose sight of how it feels to be an outsider, which shows in her interactions with people like her neighbor Timmy.
+Bones is a great mix of snarky and sincere, and makes for an exciting love interest.

A few things I didn't like:
+Sex and lust turned into love a little too quickly for me
+The ending felt a little forced, there were a few twists that I thought didn't really fit into the plot's set-up.
