Been a few years since I read this, but i remember it being a great coming of age horror novel in the same vein as Clegg's neverland, King's the body or McCammon's Boy's life. Set in the 70's this is a great horror mystery.

A boy witnessed a horrendous act. An act that would end his innocence. An act that went down spiral from there.

Thought provoking introduction. Carefully paced, tension packed, twists and turns that leaves you wondering what happens next and at the same time never shying away from exploring topics such as family relationships.

Newman's Midnight Rain hits home on so many levels. Even though you'll ready know who survives (and don't) at the end, it doesn't take away the tension you'll feel while reading this wonderful piece of a book.

Another thing why I liked this book so much, is that when the narrator invited me to a trip down memory lane he doesn't just say 'Come' instead he holds my hand and never lets go. Especially that darn library scene - only difference is that our Librarian is cool.

OMJeebus, the lies run deep in Midnight!

This sure didn't make me giggle like People Are Strange, but the story is amazing! Every time I got comfortable, it slapped me in the face again!

This didn't ramp up (in my opinion) until about 200 pages in. The main character felt a little typical, and I wished I had felt more connected. I have some unanswered questions about how his brother felt about the events in this book. The ending was great and very tense. I wish the beginning two-thirds had felt that way as well!

This was a coming of age tale that was compared to Boy's Life on the cover. That's a bold statement.

A young boy, Kyle, witnesses a murder. ( Very Boy's Life-ish so far.) " Do you remember the exact moment when your childhood ended? I do."

So begins the mystery and the rain. This is a fine tale of growing up the hard way. Kyle is discovering that all is not what it seems to be. Not the sheriff, not his mother, and not even his older brother, Dan. He's trying to do the right thing, but that isn't always easy.

I was expecting a horror novel, but that's not what this is. Again, it's a coming of age novel, but what's different about it is that Kyle has no friends. I can't think of any COA novel where the protagonist didn't have any friends. I found that a bit strange.

Even though this wasn't really a horror novel, I did enjoy it. The pacing was steady, the story compelling, and the characters believable. I enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to fans of coming of age tales.
