This is my first time reading such a story, and while not what I expected I definitely enjoyed turning each page. There are definitely adult themes in the story, it is maybe teenager friendly, but the story was otherwise engaging; rich in mythos, the story has the characters in a world that can easily confuse the reader if they are not somewhat familiar with the mythology. The romance itself seemed to fall a little flat, so I won't be grabbing the sequel, but that may be the norm for this series and simply doesn't jive with me.

Definitely an interesting and enjoyable read, I would recommend getting a physical copy of the book so you can enjoy the artwork within!

Mo Ran is a moron and Chu Wanning is probably one of the most tragic characters I have read. Half the time, I don't know whether to laugh or cry and I love it so much.

It is dark though, so if you have trouble with certain topics, heed the trigger warnings list.

FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR SANITY PLEASE TAKE THE TRIGGER WARNINGS SERIOUS!!! This book is no joke. It will leave you traumatized and crying for days but if you manage to pull through it might just change your brain chemistry. It did change mine, as I am still thinking about it 2 years after reading the fan translation (in a positive way). There are very graphic rape scenes so be aware of that, but the story is about SO much more and the ending won't let you down. The age difference between the main couple is
Spoiler10 years at the beginning of the story with the younger one being 16, but they don't have any sexual interactions during that time and the younger one is pursuing the older one in the end. In my opinion it is not as bad as some people make it out to be.

The author wrote the most tragic scenes (remember: yes, it can and wil always get worse), but will make up for it with comedy and romantic bits that made me want to run up my walls because I want what they have (minus the suffering). If you don't mind the triggers, please do yourself a favor and give Mo Ran and Chu Wanning a chance!

This book... Oh my god, wtf 😅😅😅

The MC is absolutely a terrible person and most of the characters aren't much better (except Shi Mei, bless him). I don't wanna give spoilers, but if you read through the content warnings, you're basically reading a list of the protagonist's misdeeds.

The main plot is that the MC is reborn and has the chance to redo his life, so I'm very curious to see if that's actually possible. Can he go in a better direction? If yes, does that erase his past crimes? How much can truly be forgiven?

I think I would enjoy this story more if the main relationships were more healthy. The plot and themes have kept me very invested, but oh my god, I don't know if I could ever recommend this book because a large part is romance, but it's sooo problematic. The title alone indicates a relationship between a student and teacher (a disciple and master/Shizun), and in this first book, there is such a huge age gap and it's honestly very yikes.

I honestly don't know what to rate this cuz it's awful but also really well-written and I couldn't look away??!? I think I'll give it a 3.5 for now, but that may change. 😅

Minus half a star because of the pacing, which feels for a western reader sometimes a little it sloggy, mostly because Chinese books are not following a 3 act structure. It's more like taking us on a journey meeting interesting people and seeing interesting places. The western reader then wonders "So what? , but it's all just part of the journey.
That said, I still read this 480 page  book in just a couple of days and fell in love with the really well done characters, despite their cruelty.
Be warned: This book is sometimes really dark.
