3.5 stars. I was skeptical at first as there was a lot of telling and not showing. Also it seemed like it tried to cram in a bunch of social commentary. But I stuck with it and it actually wasn’t that bad. It kept me engaged and wanting to know how things would end. Brandi did get on my nerves most times though, and seriously, she didn’t have ANY friends?? Just Nate?

literally could’ve been a gossip girl plot line, like one of the psycho ones, i felt helpless for the whole middle part. it was interesting, i enjoyed it mostly

i dnf’d at 47%
at first, i was liking the book, though i was having a hard time grappling the micro aggressions, perpetuation of stereotypes, and clichés found at every page turned. i pushed through cause i wanted to see where exactly it was going, but the more i read the more brandi, the main character, became INCREASINGLY unlikeable and lacking accountability for choices she had made.
for a thriller, there were quite a few spicy scenes in the 14 chapters i read, from both the main character and supporting ones, too.
i feel like i would’ve stuck to it had the antagonist, taylor, would’ve been written differently. has she’d more depth or been written outside of what society see high echelon kids, this would’ve been a more… exciting? read(?) i was forcing myself to read and nearly 50% into the book, nothing really had happened to suggest >thriller<.

Ok.. first time around, I really couldn’t get into this book. The opening scene was just really boring and I couldn’t quite tell where it was going. But my GOD… when I finally got into it?!? This book consumed me, and was consumed (in a day). Quite literally gave me horrible anxiety and made me cry like 5 times thinking about all of the real people who are wrongfully incarcerated and never brought to justice.
Now.. Brandi is REALLY fucking stupid. She knows so much, but doesn’t know that you never speak to the cops without a lawyer? Thinks taking $10k from a soon to be murderer is a better plan than asking her wealthy boyfriend for money? Stupid, stupid, stupid. And I can only justify so much of it.
Taylor is… a lot. To be honest, I’m more scared of her friends, specifically Mei. The storyline regarding her mom was really interesting!
I think that the authors, in their quest to involve race in the storyline, drove their point(s) home in a bit of an odd way. Like, I get it, but there’s a way to put this in the subtext

Shoutout to Nate cause he was the only person in the story who had even a lick of sense. Brandi had no backbone and overshared BAD. Like what happened to moving in silence?? And Taylor?? The entitlement and racism and just unmitigated gall was actually astounding. I have never wanted to drag a character by their hair so bad. I enjoyed the story for the most part and was heavily invested throughout. The ending wrapped up a little too perfect which led me to give this book a lower rating.
