There were some characters in this book I absolutely hated. For quite awhile, Pip was one of them. Then, around page 300 or so, it was as if he suddenly grew up. After that, the action got easier to follow as well as understand and I was genuinely invested in the story.

I'm sure there are a million reviews of this already.
So worth a read though, if you love language and good humor.

I might be in the minority on this, but I prefer the revised ending to the original. The romanticized encounter in the ruins might be a little sentimental, but it's much more satisfying than the mundane dryness of the brief meeting in the street.
Also, this is a fucking magnificent novel.

The first 3/4 of this book was hard for me to get through. It all felt very wordy and had more details than I had thought necessary.
As I neared the end, I realized that everything included was important and had a beautiful ending.
I definitely recommend the audio version as it helped me get through this.

This book is on my TBR, it fits the Popsugar challenge 2021 challenge #4, an author who shares your zodiac (Aquarius), and #39 a book everyone seems to have read. (I Have read it before, but a long time ago for school, and I think it was abridged.) It will also fit another challenge for an author with a February birthday

Fantastical story that an unknown benefactor will just one day bestow a lad with hundreds of pounds a year and support his education. Lad struggles to cope with money after his lowly origins. Bizarrely loves a cruel young lady who is horrible to him. Benefactor turns out to be a criminal but there's plenty of lessons to learn about judging people. These are some of my take home messages!
I was aware of few aspects of the story from reading children's versions and because so many Dickens characters are reused in other things or have passed into general culture. But there was still a lot to be surprised and excited by - listening to the audiobook there were times I gasped at what was happening. Over all however it is sometimes slow paced and there's a bit of waffle or a mid-book slump - although I could instead call it a sweet look into 19th century domestic life. Moral? Wealth is wasted on young men who literally piss it up the wall and crash back down.
