AR Torre is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Between this novel and The Good Lie, consider me a huge fan. This book isn’t a huge thriller/mystery but it has some disturbing elements. The characters in this book are so well-developed and unique. I cried. I laughed. Amazing book.

it took me a long time to get past the beginning and then i finished the whole rest in a really short time because i couldn’t put it back down. this was really heavy in a very visceral way that made my chest feel tight because i picked up on the little hints leading up to the climax and it drew me in and gripped me and didn’t let go until the very end when, much like helena, i feel like it gave me a sense of absolution and finally allowed me to breathe a sigh of relief.

This first 80% of the book I felt was extremely slow. There’s enough clues to give away the big shocker but not the details and why Helena is so ... rigid.
Helena is so abrasive and that makes it very hard to feel any empathy for her.
80% of the book I wasn’t at all connected to Helena. I didn’t feel for her or really want to know what happened to her. The last 10% made the first 80% worth it however.

It’s strange to say and I myself want to roll my own eyes. Who would want to read that much of a book for the last tenth of it? Read it.

Something clicked within the last 10% of the book. I could feel myself tearing up and finally feeling something for Helena.

Marks viewpoint and what he added to Helena’s story was dry in the beginning . I didn’t understand it, nor did I like it. But it is wrapped into a beautiful ending. Mark brought to the story what Helena lacked until the end.

I actually quite enjoyed this book but I took so dang long to read it because I’m in a lowkey reading slump. I liked the pacing of the chapters & the resolution though.

This will be short and sweet:
Ooooooooooooooo This was a good one. I've been really digging the darker books and this one didn't fail. YAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS.

“That is how life is, it gives us burdens to carry and doesn’t give a damn about the weight. We shoulder it or we break.”

Re-read: 2024

I cried. Again. The best thing about reading so many books is that 7 years later it felt like reading this for the first time.

I finished this in the span of a 3.5 hour train ride, if that tells you how I feel about it

I'm an avid reader so it just makes my day when a book has the ability to completely consume me.
I couldn't put it down. I'm texting my friends pushing this on them like it's chocolate cake... Dooo ittt!

I love Alessandras books but this one sets her apart. Her best work yet. I felt the need to hug Helena at one point. Physically felt it. She wouldn't have put up with that nonsense, but she needed it.

It's rare anymore that a book makes me say "Wait...what? Wow!!!" and I said exactly that. I needed that. I've been burnt out on the fiction out there and needed to be reminded that books can still make me feel something, whether it's surprise, sympathy, or disgust. This is my "Book of 2017".
