I thought this started off a little slowly, but by about halfway through, the pace picked up. This story was important to tell, as it provides insight to a topic that isn’t widely known.

The storytelling focus on the relationship dynamics between Lily and Kath, as well as Lily’s relationships with her family and Chinese friends, was very well done. It showed how conflicted and frustrated Lily was with her feelings toward Kath and how her parents’ and family’s opinion of her changed.

This was obviously very well-researched and meaningful to the author. I appreciated this story being written.

This book was amazing !! If you’re into historical fiction and into queer discovery then I’d recommend this !! Also I’d recommend to read the Authors Note because it gives out some inspiring and informative information and history about what is like to be queer, Asian America, and most especially lesbian in the 1950s plus nineteen century. Please read this book. It is outstanding and  beautiful. 5 stars.  ⭐️

i’ve been on the search for more queer love stories and this was phenomenal. such a complex yet interesting story and watching lily and kath fall in love was so sweet. truly was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire novel.

Slightly disappointed in myself that it took me this long to get to reading this because I LOVED it! Really enjoyed reading a lesbian, Asian American story and I learned a lot about the history, too. Highly recommend :')

This book was perhaps the best book I've read all year. From it's nuanced portrayal of teenaged lives, to the fear that coming of age as a queer teen during the Lavender Scare, to the dangers of being a Chinese American during the Red Scare. This doesn't gloss over the awfulness that 1950s America was, but it doesn't sensationalize it, either. Genuinely one of the most beautiful representations of human beings grappling with a difficult world, despite being flawed themselves, and how love changes us.
