An epistolary novel told in verse, Dear Mothman follows Noah, a closed trans, autistic sixth-grader after the death of his best friend, Lewis. Noah decides to write to Monthman, a cryptid that Lewis loved, and find proof that he exists. More than that, this is a story about greiving, friendship, queerness, and growing up.

We watch as Noah makes friends and grows, even while still remembering and greiving. There is so much about finding your people, understanding and being understood - but also the struggle of communicating and opening up enough to let people understand you.

So much about this book was incredible and touching, it's hard to put it into words. It takes some unexpected turns and was healing and cathartic in a way that only queer middle grade/YA lit can be.

In a way, I'm glad I'm much older than the intended audience, because I think if I were still 12 years old this would have hit me too hard. I found my inner middle schooler relating so much to the types of thoughts Noah had. While there are definitely heavy subjects discussed in the book, I think the overall story and tone is hopeful and it was refreshing to see Noah have both supportive parents and accepting,  open-hearted friends.

An exploration of trans identity, grief, and being in the world as a queer autistic person. It's about identifying with the strange and monstrous in a way that brings peace. Dear mothman is about not being alone. It's beautiful, sad, and cozy.

A powerful story about loss, love, discovering yourself, and Mothman. Noah is a character that any trans masculine person can see themselves in.

This was a good read, and relatively quick since it’s all in verse. I wanted to like this more than I did, and I wonder if I was either closer to the age of the main characters or if they were closer to mine it would have changed how I felt. The loss of a friend, especially wrt car accidents did hit home for me though. The suddenness of it, feeling turned upside down. Gow really captured with Noah all the feelings of uncertainty and complicated emotions of losing a friend your age, and even just like how your parents act after, and somehow that’s what I liked best about reading this. Thought I was gonna like all the Mothman stuff the best since he’s my favorite cryptid, but a lot of that fell to the wayside for me and instead the grieving process stood out to me
