Out of all of his books that I’ve read by him (granted that’s only 4 books), this has got to be the most Murakami….esque? It has everything I love from him. The mystical. The unexplained. The wit. The beauty. Whatever magic Murakami is doing, it’s working.

But saying this book is Murakami-esque also includes the terrible writing of women. Why is it when a woman character is introduced it is usually followed by some erotic remark? Why are the women only there for sex? Some parts of this book made me uncomfortable precisely because of these unnecessary erotic moments. Bro… she’s 17. Stop it, please.

The book is part sci-fi and part fantasy (theres a map that i didnt get in my version) which is interesting coming from someone I read for the surreal and STILL manages to pull that off while also being one of the funniest books I’ve read (partly because its so weird and unhinged at times)

Wanna remark that I went into this book blind (I didn’t even read the text at the back). I was only interested in this book because of the title. And yet, this book manages to capture my intrigue with such a convoluted and nonsensical all-over-the-place story by virtue of me being curious of what the fuck is going on. I really loved the concept of the consciousness proposed by Murakami here. By the end, all will be explained and yet I’m still left in the dark with only a vague understanding of what just happened. You can’t keep getting away with this Murakami, and I love you for it.

Questo è un libro con un incredibile potenziale, ma secondo me non è riuscito ad arrivare dove voleva effettivamente andare a colpire. Lo stile di Murakami è comunque sempre spettacolare.

I am so confused and amazed at the same time. Murakami loves leaving open endings in his books and I truly love it (or hate it)
