After reading Brigid Kemmerer's Cursebreakers series, I was a little skeptical about reading Defy the Night. That specific series was good, I even own all of the books, but I don't think that it was ended very well. However, holy crap. Defy the Night knocked all of those doubts so far away from my mind at the end of the chapter.

The map was beautifully illustrated, so much better than the maps in the Cursebreakers series. I even loved the little page where it told the reader who the characters were. The storyline was absolutely amazing, and the pacing was perfect. I would re-read this book over and over again, until the pages will fall apart because of my re-reading. When I go to the book store next, I'm going to drop so much money on this book.

5/5 stars. I would 100% recommend this book to any fantasy reader, or even any reader at all.

This was so much more than I expected. I've never read any books by Brigid Kemmerer before this one, despite owning A Curse So Dark and Lonely for a couple of years. It's has been near the bottom of my tbr pile, but I think after the next book in this series is read, I'll pick it up and give it a try.

The characters are so well rounded in this story. The relationship between the brothers is so bittersweet my heart might burst. I can tell a lot of thought was put into this plot and it really paid off. I cannot wait to start the next book!

January 2024: Re-read in preparation for the third book to release later this month: I don’t know why I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much the second time, but I did! I’m excited to be back in this world and am eager to see where they take the story in book 3.

June 2023: I listened to this one on audiobook and really enjoyed it! Loved the multiple POV with separate narrators, loved the characters, and enjoyed the emotional complexity of the storyline. I also appreciate that even though there’s more to the story, it didn’t end on a massive cliffhanger. Looking forward to book 2.

This is one of the best true YA books I’ve read. A multi-point of view book with a Robin Hood-esk concept of stealing medicine from the rich to give to the poor. Kemmerer created a country in turmoil where you can’t trust anyone, not even yourself. Not sure how many books will be in the series, but I’m excited to see what’s next for Tessa.

Solid read with an interesting plot. I enjoyed this one! There were a couple of times where I predicted the twist, but it was executed in an entirely unexpected way which was so fun. I do enjoy a good slow burn but this one did not fully deliver so maybe in the next book.

Overall: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.5

AHHH!!!!!! I sat on this for just the right amount of time. I picked up the audiobook the other day and devoured it like a pmsing teenager craving chocolate. I absolutely loved this story and immediately went to pick up the 2nd and then found out there's a 3rd(!)

I love this fantasy, political, romance. The YA is good and the story was amazing so far. I loved that it didn't end in a cliffhanger, but that there was definitely more story to be told.

Narrators were awesome for the audiobook.

Very entertaining read! I love a good retelling of a fairy tale - this one has Robin Hood vibes.
