This book was sold as a thriller/mystery… it’s that but with a little bit of supernatural element as well. That’s not always my thing so take the review with a grain of salt!! The story is about a mythical creature called a Silke, who I’d never heard of before but is a legend of a seal like human… even though I didn’t love that specific part there were some twists and things that kept mystery elements. Decent read overall

I have been itching for a story about selkies and was so happy to stumble on this beauty. Being a sucker for Celtic lore I snagged it as soon as I read the first few lines of the blurb.

The story switches between past and present as we follow Ruby, a loner of a woman avoiding her family and their secrets; Joanna a cop and family member of Ruby; Constance, a woman who claims to be a selkie; Leonie the daughter of Constance and Gregor...the father of Leonie and the thief who has stolen Constance's skin.

From the beginning this book held me in suspense as we moved through the timelines and tried to piece everything together. This is a true physiological thriller that will grip you by the collar and refuse to let go..even after it's finished. I found every character to be intriguing in their own way, even the mysterious and dark Gregor who from the beginning....something felt off about. This story dives into the relationship of mother and daughter, giving us multiple prospectives on what at times can be a complicated entanglement.

The folklore was beautifully captured and woven into this dark story. It was so much more than what I could have hoped for. Each chapter begins with quotes that pertain to the Scottish/Celtic lore and the songs mentioned were true to its roots. I wish more people were talking about this book because it deserves all the attention.

I see a reread in the near future!

Took me a while to get into but once I did I was invested. Definately made me think about how physically vulnerable I am as a woman and how we can never truly know who the true psychos around us are.

Interesting, it was a suspense, with a hint of mythical magical. The MC has issues, irritating and immature at times I had a hard time liking her. The bad person is so << shutter >> The flaws in the characters just didn’t fit well for this reader.

Ruby is estranged from her family. She avoids calls, seeing them, doesn’t even even them know where she lives. Then she isolates herself, taking time away from work, rarely has human interaction at all. One sleepless night she notices her neighbor, fit good looking practicing yoga she sneakily watches. After a while she gets stalkers and manipulates a meeting with him. Unfortunately for her, she’s way out of her league in this field.
Ruby has a sister, a cop. When Ruby gets in trouble her sister risked everything to try to protect her. yes, that is wonderful but she does it in such a way I wanted to scream. She’s a cop, she knows how not to get caught but she just does everything wrong. I slammed the book done more than once with a “Seriously ?!”
There is physical abuse, verbal abuse, child abuse, and more. The bad is really a nasty one, and a smart one. It was so easy to hate this person.
The magical touch was a bit outside the story for me. It was worked into the story but still felt outside of it. I felt like the story would have been better if more time was spent on it or if it was dropped completely.
I liked the story, but it felt like there was too much unbelievable, and stupid actions from characters.

I’m not usually a fan of supernatural elements baked into my mysteries, but I was intrigued by the way this book handled that aspect of things. I liked the shifting perspectives because they added complexity to the interpersonal relationships.
