Really enjoyed this but again it took me way too long to figure out this was linked to another series by this author!! That's twice in one weekend where my brain has failed me

This book was angsty and heartwarming as Luka and Rook found their way to each other again. Luka was going through so much when he came back to his hometown and having his best friend Rook by his side was equally heartbreaking as well as heartwarming. I am so excited to see where this series goes in the future.

A series starter always brings with feelings of anticipation and nervousness, especially when it comes from a favorite go-to author whose previous series left its heart print on your soul--although to be fair, that's what happens with every A.M. Johnson read. Meet Me in the Blue is the first novel in Johnson's Hemlock Harbor, and every single expectation and hope I had were handily met, surpassed, and obliterated, leaving me with these emotions--all good, giddy, and glorious, of course. In short, what an amazing beginning! It's also set the bar for the rest of the books to come in the series, and fingers crossed each one meets the challenge, although experience has taught me to not underestimate how many times this author is capable of giving readers characters and stories that we can't help but become emotionally invested in and absolutely attached to.

In my nearly five decades of living, one of my regrets has always been the relationships that I allowed to fall to the wayside, usually due to lack of effort on my part or the other person's, whether knowingly or not. Which is why I relating to both Luka and Rook and the pause in their friendship was actually easier than I'd care to admit. I empathized with them, and I understood why Luka made the choices that he did five years prior and why Rook was cautiously optimistic that they would be okay. I loved seeing how easy their friendship seemed to be via flashbacks while also appreciating where they were headed as a committed couple. The support system they had, both in terms of family and close-knit friends, was refreshing. There was a point where I shed a few tears, but ultimately, this series starter left me with a smile in my heart. Five-plus stars for Meet Me in the Blue.

Meet Me In The Blue was completely different from the first book I read by [a:A.M. Johnson|1013748|A.M. Johnson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1620512892p2/1013748.jpg], the plot took me by surprise and I think it's one of the best slow burn+hurt comfort+second chance I've read, with a story of love and redemption that really broke my heart and managed to heal it throughout its pages. In addition, it is the beginning of the new series of this author and I am very excited.

Luka is a character with a rather complex plot: he has always been in love with his best friend, he has never been able to confess his feelings and decides to run away from them by moving away from Hemlock Harbor & Rook in the process, something I could fully understand given the years of friendship he shared with Rook and everything Luka thinks he knows about him. Luka is a lover of photography, a man who also lives with great guilt now that his dad is sick, but who is finally determined to face his feelings, the possible loss, and to win Rook's friendship again.

Who is even more complex than Luka, Rook is going through a big personal crisis: he has a thousand doubts about himself & about his love life and the arrival of Luka to Hemlock Harbor intensifies his everything & the pain that his departure left. But Rook is a man with a big heart, that although he's angry & hurt, he is ALWAYS there for his friend when he needs him and accepts him as he is.

I think what I enjoyed the most about this book was how different the love story of Rook & Luka was, I loved that they never question their love for each other despite of the suffering that sometimes brings them, but that their journey through the book is to find their way back to each other, not just as friends. They have the most complicated, tender and fun moments together, many obstacles to overcome, situations to discover and a connection so special that it made me love them much more than I expected.

This feels fairly similar to To Catch a Firefly. Not in a bad way but in an “I already read something just like this recently” way.

"Luka y yo éramos como dos ríos que se precipitaban hacia el mismo mar abierto, y no había nada en este mundo, ni la muerte, ni la distancia, ni el tiempo, ni siquiera mi propia ingenuidad, que pudiera separarnos."
