I could read this story a million times and not get tired of it. Gabaldon's story telling is so rich with detail, history and her story telling makes you forget that her books are so long. I can fall right into Claire's world, never missing a beat.

This book is way too slow with too many graphic rape scenes. One of which is legitimately torture and the author goes into DETAIL. I'm not sure a trigger warning even does it justice.

My favorite part of this book is definitely the vibe that it sets. I like historical fiction and this is a great example of it. Gabaldon does a great job setting the scene, and her writing throughout the book is very pretty. I think the violence and sex is quite gratuitous, although I knew that going into this book. I found some parts of the book a bit slow and hard to read. I think Claire, at times, is a unreliable narrator so there was a few occasions where I didn’t know what she was talking about or what was going on. However, despite that I did find myself picking this book up again and again. I also thought the ending was nicely done. I’m not really invested enough to read the entire series, but I did enjoy outlander by itself.

The premise is interesting but it only gets you so far. I really can’t stand Claire and every decision she makes is frustrating and confusing. The setting of Scottish Highlands is what drew me in, but the mundane scenes in the castle and the tyrannical Jack Randall took away any enjoyment I experienced.

You can have a historical drama/romance/period piece and not have themes of sexual assault. Stop writing this shit. It’s dehumanizing and books (and tv shows) like this perpetuate sexual violence in media.

This book was torture, but also thoroughly addictive. It wasn't particularly dark, but so much stuff Happened all the time, and it's all so Dramatic, I had to take several breaks in reading else I would have probably screamed from frustration.
Spoiler I lost count of the number of times someone tried to either murder Claire or rape her. This has been already asked, but seriously, why all the rape? Captain Randall seemed to always be there. But the cherry on top? Claire swooping in to save Jaime, them making a deal with Randall, and then Claire getting attacked by wolves? I just couldn't.
But I did want to finish it. I'm not sure how to rate my enjoyment of it though - 3 stars seems respectable but insufficient, and 4 stars doesn't measure up to the rest of my 4-star reads. So... 3.5?

I enjoyed the first half of the book but by the end it honestly felt like the plot was there only to justify the smut. Jamie was my favorite character but by the end he had lost all semblance of personality and coherency in favor of whatever the plot or Claire's own arch required. Claire herself was very annoying and unlikable to me, but her actions and personality made sense for the plot so it's not really a critique and more of a lack of affinity on my part.
Gabaldon is a very good writer and I truly enjoyed the historical fantasy part of this. Not sure if I'd read the rest of the series after that infamous dungeon scene tho. Definitely read and heed the warnings on this one.
