I'm shocked that this book is rated higher than the previous entry. Parts of it are certainly better, but there are so many odd and problematic views on women and how they are treated and characterized. Or the fact that a man is told he's going to be used as a stud and is just totally fine with it like, "Yeah bro, this is awesome."

The best parts are connecting Geralt to Ciri and I suspect the following novels will be better because of that. This is the heart of the stories, the games, and the show. The rest is just filler and, while often entertaining, is also often boring and problematic.

2 stars seems harsh, but it really was just "ok". I'll keep reading because I love this world and Geralt + Ceri.

so so so good !

the yennefer stories at the beginning of the collection were great to continue to establish her character and her relationship with geralt. she is a very interesting person. im excited to see more.

the doppler story and essi's tale were very interesting. i am very much enjoying how much dandelion we get here. he is so brilliant and brings out something great in geralt. essi's infatuation with geralt was so sad - she was a lovely character who i wish we could have met again. dandelion's song that he composes at the end was perhaps one of the most heartfelt moments of the series so far.

and then we have the ciri stories. meeting little ciri was perfect. she works so well with geralt, and seeing how quickly they bond and feel comfortable in each other's presence is wonderful. 'something more' was great as geralt dipped in and out of consciousness, lingering on past memories and questioning the concept of destiny before finally being reunited with ciri after losing hope of her survival. the scene where they run into each other's arms was beautiful.

they came together in the centre of the farmland. the mousy-haired girl in a grey dress. and the white haired witcher with a sword on his back, all dressed in black leather, gleaming with silver. the witcher bounding softly, the girl trotting, the witcher on his knees, the girl's thin hands around his neck, the mousy hair on his shoulders

'am i your destiny?'

'you're more than that ciri. much more'

Conflicted on this one. I still enjoy the story overall, but I've discovered that I hate Yennefer specifically. I found her so obnoxious that if the third short story in the collection had also featured her so prominently, I think I might have DNF'd the book. But the subsequent story had the same charm I'd liked from the first book, and Ciri was a delight. Such a delight that I'm inclined to continue on with the story despite Yennefer.

I enjoyed this one more than the first collection. It was a lot more character focused. It was such a great way to get to know geralt's motivations for certain actions and his dynamics with the characters introduced. And I think the collection of stories sets up the world extraordinarily well.

I think my fav would be a shard of ice and bounds of reason.

The structure of the stories just can't keep my attention, and the writing is so detached from the characters. It's just not for me.

The action and adventure were good, and I was entertained by Geralt and Dandelion's adventure. I will say the books do hold a bit of sexism I could do without. Otherwise it was a decent novel.
