Certainly worth a read given the impact of the book and author in black literature especially American and how obvious the book and Wright is in conversation with Camus but it’s a very heavy and depressing read that being in the mind of not even Bigger but Wright’s beliefs gave me a lot of despair about the world and the US in particular.

Native Son is the story of Bigger Thomas, a twenty year old Black man, who over the course of this novel commits two murder and rape. It’s a very confronting read. Wright’s genius lies in showing how systemic racism, instances both large and small but ever present, shamed Thomas, infuriated him, frustrated him, made him fearful and contributed to his actions. His anger and rage practically jumped off the page. Wright made it possible to empathise with this character, to feel sympathy towards him, while still abhorring his horrific actions. Bigger Thomas is a character that has stayed with me long after I’ve finished reading the book. More than eighty years later prisons are filled with men just like Bigger Thomas. Society has yet to adequately address and remedy our complicity in putting them there.

This was so challenging to listen to without feeling  anger and sorrow, but that’s what gave the book its greatest appeal. It was so real and so emotional as to be completely believable and reflective true events.

Ruined for me a bit by studying it, but the first time I read it I could not put it down. The main character is awful and does horrible things to women, but the discussion around the oppression and prejudice that led him to that state is fascinating. Takes place over only a couple of days and will stay in my mind for a long time.

Found it very full on and difficult to continue reading about such an unlikeable character. Also found the lack of chapters and page breaks challenging.
