This book was so good. As a fellow female veteran, who  experienced the Army around the same time as the author, so much of her experience rang true. It’s both disappointing and comforting to hear that other women had such similar experiences.

Of all the cult and fundie memoirs I've been reading and listening to recently, this one is unique because half of it is about her experience in the U.S. Army after leaving the fucked up cult she grew up in. Her insights about programming, group think, propaganda, and us vs. them mentality are interesting, but the biggest similarity she drew between CoG and the Army is the way men control and manipulate women. I found this to be a super interesting and unique perspective on group organization. Overall, a very good cult memoir, but I would warn that the child abuse, pedophilia, and sexual abuse is especially bad in this book even for a cult memoir. Children of God is a particularly heinous cult when it comes to child abuse and pedophilia. Look up Ricky Rodriguez for a horrifying example.

Got this book as an ARC. Big thank you to St Martin’s Press.

This story was told largely chronological through her childhood with both her childhood understanding as well as her adult understanding at times. There were instances where I wish we’d delved deeper into bits and pieces of interest instead of glossing over, and we went deep into details I thought could have been glossed over.
Also, after she gets out, the story moves very very fast until it goes slowly through her military career which to me could have a follow-up book as it’s an important topic of its own. While I saw small strands of bringing it back to her former cult life - it wasn’t enough for me.
