4.5 stars rounded down — but I still love this series!

Overall, the way the author communicates Matthew & Diana’s time in 1590 is educational and exciting. I actually just prefer the slight shifts in the timeline they used in the tv series because it gave Diana more time to work on her power, making the abilities she finds towards the end and in the third book more believable as opposed to rushed.

There were also some events that occur that seem unlikely to not have drawn attention from humans and thus interference from the congregation. But not enough to be a huge demerit to the rating.

If you enjoyed the first book, don’t wait to continue the series!

This reminds me a good bit of Outlander with more magic.

as with the first installment of the series, i can’t explain exactly why i enjoyed this book... but i did. it’s easy to see the massive shortcomings now that i’ve finished, but there wasn’t a moment spent reading where i wasn’t totally absorbed in the story and enjoying myself—and that’s exactly what i look for in a book like this.

I really enjoyed this one and getting to see the characters again. I love all the little details that the author adds, it really makes the whole story. The chapters are long, which can make it a little difficult to get through. But overall I really love the story and can't wait to see how it plays out in the next book.

Okay, I’m really into this story now.  Though Harkness definitely has a tendency to write about extraneous details and go off in a tangent (a La Outlander), I actually really enjoyed reading them in this book.  The historical research she had to have done was astounding.

I also thought the way she wove history and Diana and Matthew’s story together was so fun.  I loved the tidbits of real history we got, mixed in with Harkness’s own alterations and opinions on what might have really happened.

There were a few questions I had about the logistics of the time spinning, but they didn’t dampen my enjoyment of the book.

Overall I’m really getting into her writing style and so excited to see what happens now that they’re back and Diana’s magic has been explained/discovered.
