I love Joy Fielding's work, but this one wasn't my favorite of her books. I think I expected more of a thriller, but this story was more about relationships with that thriller, bad thing lurking in the background. Still a good story, just not my favorite of her books.

THE PLOT

Paige and Heather are cousin-emies (cousin + enemy). Heather wants to be Paige and even went as far as snatching her mans. Paige, the "cool, easy, breezy girl-next-door" type is trying to live her life and dabbles in a lil online dating. But, watch out, because there's a killer on the loose and his hunting ground is dating apps.

MY OPINNI

............. bro. I've read other Joy Fielding novels, and either she slapped this bad boy together after 6 martinis OR her ghost writer was a 10-year-old. The writing quality was abysmal. Think: "The sky is blue." "I put on my sweater. Then I went outside." (I dead ass think the sweater quote was an actual excerpt from the book). It was appalling how poor the writing was.

The intro gave the book potential, but the rest of the book was so difficult to read. I get distracted by bad writing, so unless the storyline is above and beyond, I'm going to be thinking about the writing quality the entire read.

Also, the only juicy stuff happened at the end. The ending should've been midway through the book; there was way more to explore and explain. I wouldn't even classify this a thriller. You know who the bad guy is, and the rest of the book is Paige and Heather facing off with each other over some bum ass crusty dude.

Le sigh. Do not read this one.

PROS AND CONS
Pros: Because I'm feeling nice... The intro.
Cons: Everything else. Especially the writing quality.

This book starts out with the description of a beautiful young woman who is having dinner with a man she met on a dating app. However, something seems off about her date with "Mr. Right Now". It's clear there is more to this date than meets the eye and the man plans on bringing more women back to his apartment for dinner.

I have read some of Joy Fielding's earlier books and was expecting a chilling thriller. Instead this book had some creepy elements but wasn't really a mystery or a thriller. The main story is about Paige Hamilton who goes on a dating app when her boyfriend Noah cheats on her with her look alike cousin. Her widowed mom is considering dating again and her best friend is trying to get the strength to leave her cheating, abusive husband. There were some genuinely funny moments and some that I assume were supposed to be that I didn't find humorous. I enjoyed the scene when Paige's cousin Heather visits Noah at work after learning something about his behavior at a party. However, Heather and most of the other characters are generally unlikable and I couldn't relate to any of them.

There are some awkward conversations and situations between the women as Paige tries to get over her father's death and her boyfriend's betrayal. I thought it would be more a mystery about the serial killer on the dating app. This did play an important part of the book, but it got lost in all of the subplots. The commonality among all of the subplots is that many of the characters are truly looking for love in "all the wrong places." The book was a quick read and some of it was entertaining including the ending, but the book was a strange mix of seriousness, irreverent humor, funny scenes and creepy scenes. It just wasn't what I expected from this author.

I received this book from NetGalley through the courtesy of Ballantine Books. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Solid irony and twists, with the end only partially satisfying the moralists.

To say I loved this book would be an understatement! The opening scene alone let’s you know you have opened up an amazing book! A handsome serial killer is torturing a woman he met online and stops to answer the phone to talk to his next victim he’s planning on murdering! The man uses the name Mr. Right Now and he has been murdering woman he has met on online dating sights all around the Boston area for a few months. He has it down he only lives in cities for a few months and moves on. He texts the woman makes a date and when they are comfortable he takes them back to his place for a delicious steak dinner. Then he tortures them and kills them. Paige just went through a rough break up with her boyfriend after finding him in bed with her cousin Heather. Paige is unemployed after her employer is taken over by a bigger business and she has moved in with her mother. After her friend Chloe suggests she tries online dating she decides to give it a try. Chloe just discovered her husbands secret online dating profile after receiving and anonymous phone call informing her that her husband is cheating. While meeting an online date at a bar Paige catches the attention of Mr Right Now who happens to be meeting one of his future victims at the same bar. He decides after over hearing Paige’s online name Wild Flower to stalk her online and find out as much as he can about Paige.. through out this book Mr Right now is planning on brutally murdering Paige for fun and it just makes you wonder how safe is online dating.. Joy Fielding takes you into the dark mind of Mr. Right now and I loved it! The book bounces from Mr. Right Now , Paige and Chloe and the wonderful Heather. I could not stop reading this book it had me quickly turning pages I highly recommend!! Four stars!

This is such a clever crossover of genres switching from psychological thriller to women’s fiction and then to domestic noir. It starts dark and full on, in the middle of a very warped date, and then leaves you hanging with lots of questions. Suddenly switching to the characters and their lives so you get to know and care for his potential victims.

Paige recently single and her mum Joan, her cousin Heather (who is the reason Paige is now single) and Chloe, Paige’s best friend are the four women that cross Mr Right Now’s radar. All fantastically written characters with realistic issues that see them using an online dating site all for differing reasons. But it’s the men that struck me. The author has cleverly made the bad men charismatic, charming and very dangerous. Mr Right Now is in a completely new league of his own in sociopathic terms. If I’m honest I loved it and rubbed my hands with glee every time he appeared. I like my bad guys to be very bad and highly intelligent and the author has done this with aplomb.

This book really sucked me in as I started to care about most of the women. The author has covered relationships, grief, domestic violence and sex from multiple age range viewpoints. No easy feat but it’s been skilfully tackled. Yes older women still enjoy sex but don’t tell your adult children.

This is a stand-alone book that would make a great Netflix series but I am putting it out there to the author that I would please like a Mr Right Now Book Two. The steak will be on me.

I found this book an easy enough read but also lacking in much tension. The twists were fairly predictable and I didn’t feel particularly involved with the characters. Rather an anticlimactic ending, finishing with a whimper rather than a bang !

Seriously addictive reading!

A crime thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

Told from various points of view, it is fast paced and gets hearts racing.

Full review to come on my blog soon.

I got this as an e-ARC from NetGalley.
My very first impression of the book was that something got crossed during downloading and I ended up with a wrong book. Based on the synopsis, I was expecting a thriller. Instead, I kept wondering what the heck this book is about. Having finished reading it, I still don't know what this book was about. One thing I DO know it's not a thriller, it's not a mystery. It's not even really about "the dangers of online dating".

What a terrible book. Everything was so predictable and the characters were so one-dimensional. It read like an author who has never been online dating trying to stay relevant. It also felt like an author who just hated young women. Are we supposed to feel okay that the cousin got murdered because she was a spoiled brat? What a terrible idea. Also the thought that the killer meets his victims at the exact same bar every time using the same dating profile yet somehow didn’t get caught?
