It sounded good on paper but the book didn’t live up to the hype!! The ending was better but the book was a really really slow burn to get there!! So I found it boring at times!!

This was okay. Didn’t love but a quick read. I never felt very invested in any of the characters.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4!

Hope Miller has no idea who she really is. Lyndsay finds her in the pouring rain one evening after a car crash involving a stolen vehicle. It's 15 years later and Hope still has no memory of who she once was and why she was there. She moves away from the town that she was found in, only to disappear shortly after. Lyndsay is sure something terrible has happened to her. I mean, people don't just disappear... right?

What I loved:
- Gripping from the start
- Held my attention the entire time
- Great writing
What I didn't love:
- Synopsis felt a little misleading
- Unoriginal

I thought this book was going a certain direction based on the synopsis but it took a turn I wasn't expecting, which was good, but I was actually hoping for the original story I was sold on... LOL. Sorry, can't say more without giving away spoilers! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would for someone who doesn't love police procedural novels, but this one was pretty light in that aspect and provided just enough of it IMO.

If you know me, you know that I love a great twist! Did this one have one? Yes, but also no? I mean there was a little bit at the end that felt like it was meant to be a twist but there wasn't a WOW factor to it that wasn't already implied throughout the book.

Overall, I thought this was a really good novel based on the fact that it held my attention the entire time and kept me wondering where it was going. I loved the LGBTQ+ representation in the novel as well and thought it was a really quick read. Bumped my stars down based on it not being very original and the fact that it didn't seem very memorable to me either. I'd still highly recommend it for a quick whodunit novel!

I’d hoped to start the year off with a 5 star review, but we all know those are few and far between for thrillers. I figured this book out half way through, the main plot point anyway. A few surprises hung around for me at the end. Although I was able to follow it, there was A LOT going on, with a lot of characters and detail. I listened to this book and Kathleen Early was the narrator, who is one of my faves, so that probably boosted my enjoyment. Overall it was ok, nothing to write home about.

Wildly uninteresting. There are also so many POVs and none of them are distinctive.

This was my first experience with Alafair Burke and it definitely will not be my last.

Side Note: This book apparently can be considered #6 in the Ellie Hatcher series, but is written as a standalone so it can be read apart from the series. I can attest to this as I was unaware it was part of a series and read it just fine.

15 years ago, Hope Miller was in a terrible car accident that caused her to lose her memory, a memory that has not returned all of these years later. She has no memory of who she was, or why she was found in New Jersey, in a stolen car from Indiana.

Lindsay Kelly, the woman who found Hope after the accident and now Hope's best friend, has spent the past 15 years helping Hope build a new life. So when Hope is ready to move on, ready to fly on her own in a place where nobody knows her, Lindsay is concerned. And when she goes several days without hearing from hope, she knows something is wrong.

After arriving in East Hampton, Hopes new town of residence, she realizes Hope has vanished and immediately begins searching for her friend. And when DNA evidence found in the last place Hope was known to be connects her to a decades-old murder case in Wichita, Kansas, this start to become complicated.

In pursuit of answers, Lindsay contacts a NY detective, the daughter of the man originally investigating the Kansas murders, and together, the women search for answers that may have devastating consequences.

I would consider this a "Popcorn Thriller" as it was delicious and hard to put down. I was kept in anticipation the entirety of the time I was reading and just wanted to know what happened!

This was definitely more intricately woven then I was expecting it to be, and so there were definitely a lot of different characters and threads to follow which could be challenging, but overall very manageable. Usually this might have made me feel lost, but I was able to keep up pretty easily and really enjoyed how it all came together.

This was smart, clever, and with one final twist at the end that really gave it a solid conclusion, I definitely enjoyed this one immensely!

I found Alafair Burke when she comes-wrote books with Mary Higgins Clark. This is the first book of hers that I have read and I really enjoyed it. It has a nice balance of mystery and a little lawyer drama. Each chapter is given a date and time so you can follow along. Once I had about 30% left in the book I could not put it down!
