Da biblioteca. I haven't read a whole book so long in a day in a long time. This story tells the story of Marjane, an Iranian girl growing up during the revolution and subsequent regimes.

Talking about freedom and the horrors of war and dictatorship, and the way the western world looks at West Asian countries, this graphic novel should be taught and commented in every single school.

Suicide attempt:

After Marjane comes back from Austria, at the beginning of book 4, she is very depressed and attempts suicide by drinking alcohol and taking too many pills. When this doesn't kill her, she decides to change her life completely.

Religious bigotry:

Both Islamic and Christian extremisms are brought up in this book. You can find the characters usually disagreeing with religious bigotry in Iranian politics when the story is set in Iran, but in book 3 the story is set in Europe and the Christian bigotry is seen in form of xenophobic nuns.

Positives. The artstyle suits the story wonderfully and mixes elements of western and arab illustrative styles which visually translates the identity conflict within Marjane. The story is told with so much nuance, acknowledging Marjane's (in comparison to many of her peers) privileged position, while leaving enough room for other people in her life to express their lived experience and subsequent opinions in the story. The graphic novel thrives on astute observations, such as how war can so quickly become a taken-for-granted fact or how signs of 'modern' womanhood can become signs of protest. 

Negatives. Because this graphic novel is a chronological life story which compiles important events from the author's life, it does not have a traditional story structure. The eclectic storytelling suits the life Marjane has lived but the lack of structure makes some sections drag on.

Amazing and informative memoir about growing up in Iran, the war, society and estigma. A must read for everyone.
