I found it at my local public library. This is a book for people who like to learn trivia and small bits of history. The book is set up like a religious devotional (those little daily prayer books), except it is for secular readers. It covers history, music, art, science, philosophy, religion, and literature in daily segments. Readers can learn basics in those topics in easy-to-read passages. It is a nice book to pick up and drop as the mood suits you. While readers could follow the daily reading structure, it is a book that lends itself to browsing.

My boss gave me this for Christmas last year as good "bathroom reading." She couldn't have been more correct. You read a page each day for a year and each day has a different topic that is suppossed to help you "complete your education and revive your mind." I must say that it is a good way to start the day.

This is a great way to get a little reading in each day. Of course with the Internet we have get distractions like Stumble Upon that can expose you to new subjects or expand your curiosity, but this is a fun way to read something new each day.

Areg and I are supplementing our sometimes hilariously bad page-a-day history calendar with this book in the evening. So far it's given us more interesting conversations than the calendar has.

Update:
Definitely fun, if a bit Euro-centric.

I received this book as a gift and immediately placed it on my nightstand...each night I read one entry (a teaser summary of some intellectual topic) and I swear my brain got just a little big bigger. I love the variety of topics...if one topic bores you, all you have to do is make it to the end of that page and you're onto the next one on the following night! This is an ideal gift for that intellectual who considers themselves above possessions...

The authors of this book took on WAY more than they could handle. Limiting oneself to just a page on topics like the French Revolution, genetics, and the Hebrew Bible is bound to leave giant holes in the information. And that's exactly what happened here. But it's still a nice reference and starting point. Except for the instances when they're just plain wrong. (But that's a minority of the time.)

This book was supposed to read each day and finished in a year’s time. Each Monday is a history lesson, Tuesday literature, Wednesday visual arts, Thursday science(which includes math) , Friday music, Saturday philosophy, and Sunday religion. However, some days I would be so interested that I would read though s whole week’s worth in one day. I enjoyed having insight to topics I normally would have never sought.

It was a fun project and is a nice alternative to traditional devotionals.
