Jessi and the Superbrat by Ann M. Martin

Derek Masterson, an 8-year-old actor on a popular TV show, has moved to Stoneybrook! While many of the kids in school think Derek is a spoiled brat, Jessi thinks he is sweet. A little jealous after hearing some of his Hollywood stories, Jessi does compare her life to him and considers what it would be like to be an actress.

The superbrat in this book wasn't nearly as bratty as some other other baby-sitters' charges.  (Looking at you Betsy Sobak).  I liked both stories, the child actor and Jessi trying out for Swan Lake.

These were my favorites, along with the Sweet Valley books in 5th-6th grade. I think my group of friends and I would take turns reading them and discussing. It was like our first book club! I remember writing to Ann M. Martin as a child and she wrote back (or at least someone did for her). It was one of the happiest days of my life. :)

The cover of this book and the subject matter are both a little ridiculous--but I like both so much. Honestly, I think the kid is a little bit of a creep, but Jessi's subplot with the dancing company in Stamford is one of the stronger subplots and I think it's really interesting. Plus, we get to see Mal and Jessi be besties which is nice.

I remember liking this one way more as a kid. As it is, there aren't any glaringly blatant signs that 'John' doesn't exist, which is good. But on the flipside, Jessi books frequently show her being an unbelievable bitch to her friends in her own head. She gushes like CRAZY over Derek before she starts sitting for him, calling him Waldo and confusing him with his character. But her friends catch Hollywood fever for less time than she did and she's just so... rude about it. And really, would Mal honestly act that goofy around a kid she's probably met before?

Apparently.

4 stars. Loved this one. Jessi's auditioning for Swan Lake and I loved all of the ballet stuff in this. It was very entertaining. She's also babysitting a child actor. So this was just a really fun read from beginning to end. I loved how much she bonded with Derek and their little friendship. It was adorable. Jessi is one of my favorites of the girls so it's always a good time where the book is focused on her.

More shenanigans from the BSC world - a child actor is not the like the character they play well surprise surprise
One just wishes the author and publisher would allow these young people to age or make them vampires to explain them being perpetually the same age
