My first novel by this author and I will move straight onto another. I enjoyed the different elements of this book and that it was a standalone. The unreliable narrator trope is one I enjoy but I liked that this was acknowledged throughout. The reveal was clever and poignant.

I didn't hate it, which is saying a lot for a mystery/thriller, coming from me.  Usually they bore me to death or don't manage to surprise me at all.  This one was definitely one of the better ones I've read.

A suspenceful, book with edgy characters. Will keep you up all night reading. I classify this one as a page turner.

I’ll say 3.5 stars. It was a good story, with a great gritty noir feel, and it really manages to get the feel of LA across, but the characters and idea are far from original. Still a good read.

Something just didn't click for me with this one. I've enjoyed other Hurwitz books and it won't stop me from picking him up again, but I just couldn't engage with this one.

It bothered me too. The book has an intriguing set up and drops you right into the action, but I think both of them might be part of the problem. I never got a sense for the protagonist (or the relationship with his fiancee) or why I should care about his plight. The initial crises is over and he's free within the first thirty pages. After that, despite the fact that he's being set up (or is he), I never felt he was in imminent danger.

There's a little too much exposition in parts, but if you make it through to the second half, it's much stronger.

This book started slow for me, because it felt like the main character was whiny and I didn't have a lot of sympathy for him. Sure, he had a brain tumor and is being prosecuted for his ex-girlfriend's murder, but sheesh. In any case, the book grew on me and I enjoyed the story in the end. It had an interesting twist, and some nice secondary characters.

At times though, it felt like it was trying to hard to be a Stephanie Plum novel, and just falling a bit short.
