As much as I heard this was a great book and a good series, I just couldn't get into it!! Maybe sometime later?

This book had me staying up way past my 2 am bedtime. I really enjoyed the way it was written. The humor in the writing was subtle and flawlessly placed through the pages and the world building was informative in a way that was not slow or boring. Mackayla Lane, Mac for short, is the narrator and main character of this story. She is a slightly-materialistic and self-centered, pretty, small town girl from Georgia. Her sister, Alina, was murdered in Ireland where she studied and the police have issued it a cold-case. When Mac finally receives a distressed voicemail from Alina hours before her death, weeks after her funeral, Mac decides that she needs to pack up and head to Dublin to help solve and avenge her sister's death.
Mac was not ready for what she was about to learn about Alina, herself, her world and the many things that are not human living there.
Even though I am not yet attached or in love with Jerricho Barrens or Mac Lane (aka Elle Woods) I still really enjoyed reading the characterization of them and I think that, in time, I will be.

4.5 stars. Really liked this first book, can’t wait to read the rest. I’ve been craving a new fantasy series that was unique and this one nailed it!

I'm so glad I stumbled across this book! It's my new favourite! Karen Marie Moning does amazing job at drawing you in to her dark and exciting world. The plot unravels at a perfect pace and keeps you wanting more. Mac's blonde barbie doll image really bothered me at first, as did her ridiculous love of fashion and image, however towards the end of the book I could see that changing as her fight for survival grew. I think the last few chapters showed a perfect balance between being "Mac the fashionista", and "Mac, Fae killer."
So much intrigued me in this book, I can't wait to see what the second book will reveal!

Maybe (maybe) if I'd skipped the prologue I wouldn't have DNF this at 2% (which I'm pretty sure was only partway into the first chapter). But the prologue was SO BAD! It's just a big infodump about the world and then proceeds to tell you that she's going to survive whatever the book is about since chapter 1 starts with "1 Year Earlier"
Even into chapter 1 though, it felt infodumpy and the MC was annoying.
