I understand that Nicholas Sparks books are like emotional porn for women. However, The Wedding was like hardcore emotional porn that is damaging to society because it gives women unrealistic expectations of men. Namely, it perpetuates the idea that men should be able to read a woman’s mind, know what she wants, and act on it - all without actually needing to be told anything. It bugged the hell out of me.
The book starts when Wilson forgets his wedding anniversary to his wife of 29 years, Jane. She is upset about this and cries, he realizes that the spark has gone out of their marriage, wondering if she even loves him anymore, and he sets out to bring the spark back and makes his wife fall in love with him again. He is at this a whole year before anything actually changes during which Jane has had thoughts of leaving him (confided in their son) but neither of them actually have a conversation about their relationship with each other.
Wilson’s inner monologue is incredibly self destructive; he realizes he has never been a good husband, he has worked too hard and Jane raised the kids. He constantly thinks about how he has let her down these last 29 years, how he was never the man she deserved. He goes on and on about how he has never been romantic and doesn’t know how to. Through all these thoughts he is constantly thinking about how perfect Jane is, how beautiful she still is, how much he still loves her, how amazed he was at the beginning of their relationship that she would be interested in someone like him. He still wonders what she ever saw in him, and wonders if she thinks she has made a big mistake. In short, if he was a real man, I would prescribe antidepressants and therapy.
Wilson and Jane still don’t have a conversation about anything important, but by the end of the book Wilson has figured it all out. He has spend a year making himself into the man Jane has always wanted. He lost weight, learned to cool, started asking her about her day every night, took time off work to spend with her, planned her perfect romantic anniversary night for their 30th wedding anniversary, and helped her plan her own surprise second wedding that she thought was a wedding for their daughter the whole time. Yeah. There is already too many people out there that are pissed off when their partners can’t read their mind and meet their unshared expectations. Wilson and Jane should have split a bottle of wine sat down on the porch and TALKED.
