I used to read this book all the time as a kid. I spent a lot of time playing science fiction role play games with my friends online, and the parts of this story that focused on the game and on the null-G battle room fueled a lot of young-me's imagination and storytelling at the time. It wasn't until I was an adult that I better understood the philosophical and religious references that Card bleeds into his prose, but rereading it now didn't bother me too much.  What did bother me was how long it took me to notice that there is racist language and a casual slur-drop in this book.

I read this article on Tuesday and by happenstance started reading Ender's Game on Thursday, and man did the two go hand in hand terrifyingly closely. This book was so perfectly tense. Loved it.

This book combines the two elements that I believe make a "good book." First, there is a compelling story line that urges the reader forward. Here, although the setting (sci-fi-ish) was one that is unfamiliar to me and admittedly not my preference or norm, the conflicts both in the story and within the protagonist were interesting and pushed me to turn page after page. I grew both fond and attached to not only the protagonist but several of the supporting characters as well. Long before the end, I found myself empathizing with some of the earliest antagonists, setting up the ending nicely. Second, the story carries with it greater philosophical questions about war (most obviously), love, free will, freedom, human nature, and of course morality and our relativity within it. I won't pretend to be a learned philosopher but this book begs reads, nay--compels with indignant confrontation, to consider the larger questions. I pity the reader that reads this and finds only a good story. This is a book that calls out, "share me, and then discuss!" I plan on re-reading large portions before moving onto the rest of the series.

I'm usually able to separate the art from the artist like I'm still a pretty big Harry Potter fan even though I staunchly disagree with her shitty Twitter takes. I also love me some Lovecraft, even though he was Xenophobic White Supremacist. But with Card, his philosophy is baked into these books. Like how all of the children are psychotic, except the women because of several bad evolutionary bad deals. Or how there aren't too many girls in flight school because, "it's too much for them." I don't know about the other books, since I have no plans of reading them, but I've heard stories about them. Ender is also one of the most Mary Sue, self-insert characters that I have ever read. Ender is rash and that is his only flaw. This is writing 101, but what obstacle does he overcome in order to grow? Accidentally killing a kid? There are also several lines in this book that are just flat-out creepy, like when Peter talks about his and his SISTER's pubic hairs. Orson, what the actual fuck?

This book is amazing. Everyone who loves science fiction or fantasy should read. Actually, scratch that, everyone should read it. It's epic.

Everyone who has told me to read this series, thank you friends, I was not disappointed.

Only aspect that I prefer from the movie, is the age of the kids. They seem older. Excuse me while I go to the next book.
