I've made a couple of attempts at this one, but it is too large to take on the train, and I don't get enough uninteruppted reading time other than that. Declaring it unfinished as part of clearing out my currently reading for the New Year.

I did really enjoy this but it seemed uneven, so only 4 stars not 5. Each chapter is a different topic and the topics were almost all very interesting (and those that weren't to me were because of my interest in the topic, nothing on the author's part). It just seemed to jump around a bit which decreased some of my enjoyment of it.

One of the most engaging books on modern history I have read, this takes a look at the start of the 20th Century, a time of incredibly fast-paced change not only in terms of industrialisation, but also on the subsequent effects on society and humanity in general. The focus is mainly on Western Europe, though with regular visits to Russia, the US and the East as required.

Each year is introduced through the eyes of someone who had a major influence or documented the period, which proves to be an effective device to keep such a grand view on a human level. I particularly enjoyed the parallel threads keeping track of the sciences, art and literature, music and psychology alongside the politics and historic events.

The years leading up to WWI-1900-1914 in Europe.
Exploring the culture, politics, science and events of that time.
"Fear and exhilaration formed an extraordinary creative tension, the origin of almost every idea and social phenomenon that would come to dominate the twentieth century -- socialism and fascism, nuclear physics and the theory of relativity, conceptual art and consumer society, mass media and democratization, feminism and psychoanalysis."

Shows these years as something other than a prelude to WWI. A worthwhile and fascinating endeavour.
