Reading this in school was an awful experience which I can still remember. As a disabled student, watching your peers laugh at the death of a disabled person and have their idea of disabled people as dangerous and animalistic is disheartening to say the least. Of course, adult readers can have different takeaways of the book and come away it’s a more nuanced understanding; however, I found that the book doesn’t convey the injustices well enough to be required reading, and does more harm than good.

So, I read this for class. I don't know if I would have read this book on my own, but I am glad I did read it and I will probably reread it sometime in the future. The writing is beautiful and this is a story I guess you never really forget reading. At least for me, the ending was very predictable, but you stick around because you don't want to believe it before the words slide in front of your eyes in black and white. Then you can't really believe it either, so you just have to carry on and stay pondering...

A very gruesome but beautiful regard to our understanding of what is innocent and what existential power over fellow creatures humans give ourselves the right to perform.
