Tämligen trist rysare. Mycket beroende på den svårbegriplige skurken. Freddy Krueger har bättre motiv och drivkraft för sitt handlande. Att språkhanteringen är god är det som räddar boken från ett bottenbetyg.

I'm going to begin my review with a quite from Stephen King about this book, because I think he sells it a bit better than even the synopsis:

"No, not the twins from the Kubrick movie, but the targets of a serial killer who finds a time portal in Chicago during the Depression and jackrabbits his way through recent American history, killing women and taking trophies. Until, that is, he encounters a tuff girl who’s not so easy to do away with. It’s the black-hole version of The Time Traveler’s Wife."

Lauren Beukes is now officially on my regular radar, this is the second book I have read by her, and needless to say I have been pretty impressed. She clearly put a lot of research into this book, and though it took me a bit to get hooked into what was happening in the plotline (time travel is tricky), it was a wonderful read. There were times when I was so grossed out by the description I gaged out loud, and the suspense/creepiness was on point for the entire book. If you read this, which you should, be sure to give it time to unfold for you, it isn't your regular super fast paced NYTimes novel, but it deserves your time.

The Shining Girls is one of my favorite crime thriller/horror book. I remember seeing the pretty cover in my local library, it's shine eclipsing every other book on the bookshelf. I also remember having to wait the impossible 2 MONTHS for reservation to expire so I could get my hands on it.

"In Depression-era Chicago, Harper Curtis finds a key to a house that opens on to other times. But it comes at a cost. He has to kill the shining girls: bright young women, burning with potential. Curtis stalks them through their lives across different eras until, in 1989, one of his victims, Kirby Mazrachi, survives and starts hunting him back."

I've read it fast, carrying it everywhere with me that summer. Since then, I've read it multiple times and enjoy it like it was the first. The surprise element of time travel, gore murders, crime mementos. Beukes ties it all together into a closer circle; a time traveler paradox with no beginning or ending. Harper's devoted to his girls, making them special, tracking them throughout the years, taking and leaving tokens.

“She would disappear
folded like origami
into her own dreams”
Lauren Beukes, The Shining Girls

To Harper, I give more time. Let's run the circle again, my darling! ✨⏰

Recently, one of my friends asked me what I was currently reading and I excitedly exclaimed "The Shining Girls!". Of course they then prompted me to tell them what it was about. I found myself saying "It has time travel, a serial killer and a girl who survived an attack on her life..." I had to stop myself because frankly, I am not able to adequately explain this book without making it sound odd and off kilter. It is not your traditional murder/mystery serial killer/plucky heroine story...but it works! I couldn't stop reading it...and at times it seriously creeped me out! If you like this genre and are not afraid to dabble outside of your normal reading comfort zone...give this one a try! I loved it and am eager to read more from this author!

Novel·la que barreja sense complicacions els viatges en el temps i els thrillers d'assassinats en sèrie. Tot i que està molt ben escrita, m'ha mancat profunditat en tots dos camps, quedant un text amb molts efectes especials i poca reflexió.

I did not think I was going to like this book. I had doubts, and it took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was kind of amazing.

Great writing, wonderful reflection on character. And so many times you feel just gutted with the potential for these women and how things are cut short. And how they’re cut short for so many women now and through the ages.

Definitely recommend this. But I’d say make sure you’re in the right headspace first. This is dark and grotesque in a few places, and good people are killed, and if you aren’t in the right headspace, I feel like it might take a bit to recoup. At least for me it did!

But I really enjoyed this and recommend it, and I’m glad I have a copy to revisit again in the future for a reread at some point.

Trigger warnings for all the things associated with serial killers and death and gruesome murders, but also animal death and cruelty.
