(Read for class) -- This is only the second comic book I have ever read, so I was excited to see what I thought of it as it is a genre I don't have much experience with. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved the comic style format! I was engaged throughout the whole story and the pictures only immersed me more in these character's lives. As this is my second time reading a comic (and the first time was years ago), I loved how the reading experience is more immersive with the inclusion of images.

Now on to the story... Holocaust stories shock me every time I read them because I have to remind myself that this is a true story, not just a work of fiction. That is how I felt with this book. I kept following along with the story and imagining that this is the way people lived during the war. The graphics in the comic helped communicated that experience to me even more because I could see the expression on each of the characters face. I also enjoyed the structure of it being a frame narrative. I will likely go on to read the second book.

Heart-wrenching to hear more about what Jewish people were put through. It is incredibly saddening picturing scared children being flung by their legs against walls because they wouldn't stop crying. I just cannot fully comprehend these events, and why anyone ever thought them to be acceptable. The first quote before you start this book is: "The Jews are undoubtedly a race, but they are not human". I stared at this page for about 20 minutes horrified by the thought of even thinking this. I just cannot even put into words how sensitive and personal this story was, and it truly was even more eye opening. A great read.
