This book is about a murder mystery, where we are trying to figure out who’s the killer, people keep on dying and secrets keep coming out. It’s a why choose. Which the romance story is exquisite. To be honest I tried to figure out who the killer was but I had it all wrong. I couldn’t figure it out which was embarrassing to me, but when it was displayed it made so much sense. I got so upset I wasn’t able to figure it out. But that was just me being mad at myself. The book is amazing and if you like murder mystery with some steamy romance, then this is for you.

When I pick up a Layla Reyne book, I know the suspense plot will be great. That’s exactly what I needed when I started What We May Be, and it was so good! I loved it! The romance felt a bit more like a subplot to the story, but that didn’t make it less enjoyable. Sean, Trevor, and Charlotte are clearly soulmates, they’re just amazing together!

I love a story that is filled with angst and this book definitely has it. With as much love is described between these 3 it is so hard to figure out why they just did not clear the air sooner and their lives would be so much easier, but if they did that we would miss out on this delightful book. Loved the serial killer aspect added in. Overall a 5 star read!

Tho the mystery of this book was at the forefront, it was very much about the romance between the three character as they navigate their history while dealing with a murderer, one that is very close to home, could even be the very person in front of them, and that's how the synopsis read to me, however even within the first chapter there was never a moment when I ever thought one of them could be involved, even without being in all of their heads. the mystery aspect did have some red herring but they weren't long drown out and I found the end result weird over being a surprising twist, it almost seemed the author was trying harder to trick us then really putting the killer into the scene
Spoiler(and honestly the last murder, made no sense that they kept them genderless without giving us a reason to understand why)
. saying this I am not a mystery reader; I generally find them boring so I’m not really sure I’m the person to really speak on this aspect. I did however find this pulled us along the story thought it was very clearly the pacing of the romance that had me hooked.

let's talk about the romance. I liked that it was second chance, it's one of my fav troupes, however even that was a little odd, the secrets even from us of who and why and what. I just found it confusing since by the time the story started everyone KNEW what was going on but us, so why the subterfuge, it didn't really give or take anything away from the book and overall felt like a conflict that never actually became. I found the chemistry was great through the story, more in later chapters then the first, and that they were very vocal about being poly and how others weren’t. I also liked that they were always open and accepted for who they were and the relationship they were in. Really glad it went that way, let it be a very accepted thing which is should and can be even if that’s not everyone’s norm.

overall I enjoyed the book, I do think you might want to read Fog City series, either before or after (especially Silent Knight *wink*) but it’s not really important to the overall story or the characters tho I have so hopes for the future.

What We May Be is a new suspenseful romance by Layla Reyne where three lost souls are brought back together under dire circumstances. Sean Hale left his life behind in Hanover when he walked away ten years to be there for ones he loves while protecting his partners, Charlie and Trevor. Tragedy strikes, bringing Sean back and into his lovers’ lives when they were truly getting ready to move on. With murders occurring that appear directly related to Charlie and Trevor, Sean struggles to stay away and finds himself being drawn back into their lives and their hearts. But history is hard to forget when there is so much hurt burying what they once had and the three must decide to put their family first before tragedy strikes again.

Sean Hale, Charlie Henby and Trevor Caldwell are all bruised after their unexpected breakup ten years prior. Sean buried himself in work and hiding from those he loves the most. Charlie lets her job take over so she can force the hurt to the back burner and Trevor tries to move on and find someone new to love in place of the two irreplaceable shadows from his past. When a very targeted spree of murders falls at Charlie’s feet she is forced to work with Sean and protect Trevor all while trying to keep secrets from coming to the surface. Their physical reaction to each other is just as passionate as before but the three hesitate to open up and broach the pain of their shared past. Once everything is laid bare the three’s connection only strengthens and encourages each to be honest about their shared future.

“They stayed curled together for several long minutes, wrapped in each other’s arms, grieving the time they’d lost, mourning good intentions that resulted in pain and anguish, and yet acclimating to a fresh sort of peace that was settling now that the truth was out there.”

I have read quite a bit of Layla Reyne so when this book was announced I was intrigued by the premise of a poly-relationship involving Sean, a character who had piqued my interest in prior books. The book was a great balance of murder mystery involving the small town of Hanover and the romantic storyline of the three drastically different characters. The intimate scenes were fan your face steamy and the sweet moments between the members of the triad were comforting especially as the murders hit closer to home. With a great collection of secondary characters to help the MCs on their journey back to each other and solving the crime, the story felt well developed and paced.

4 stars for a murder mystery bringing three lost souls back to each other.

First thing first, how pretty is this cover? This is one of the best cover I have ever seen. I might have only read this book because of the cover and I have no regrets.

I keep surprising myself with my choice of books lately. I haven’t read a MF book in over 4 years and the last time I have read a MMF book was never. So reading a MMF book is not something I thought I would be doing in 2021 but I did and I actually really enjoyed the experience. We got here because I’m in a reading slump and when i’m slumping, I always want to read books I would never read normally. I must thank the slump because it did me well this time.

Brief summary
Sean, Trevor and Charlotte were in love. Sean left town and broke all of their hearts. 10 years later, Sean is back and they start hanging out together again and start a relationship.

This is a romantic suspense. I really enjoyed the romance part. I liked the three main characters and they were a really good fit together, they completed each other lovingly. I loved how the three of them felt important to the important, their relationship wouldn’t have worked if one of them wasn’t that and thats the only way I enjoy poly books so I really loved that part. Also the sex scenes were sizzling hot and I loved them.

My problem with the book was the suspense part. It was a little farfetched and it didn’t make the most sense to me.

But hey, I really enjoyed most of the book so I very much count this as a win. This was almost everything I wanted at this moment in my life and I really enjoyed the experience.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

Do you ever read a romance and feel the depth of storytelling in it? Chock full of plot and plot twists, along with intriguing characterizations, you get lost in the story, and you feel as though you get every penny worth you spent on the book? This is exactly the case with Layla Reyne’s What We May Be. I usually zoom through romances, but Reyne’s newest story took some time as I meandered through the journeys of her three main characters: Charlie, Trevor, and Sean. There is simply so much to this book.

At its core, it’s a story of second chances. Charlie, Trevor, and Sean have a past. It’s now been 10 years since they last saw each other, and Sean is back in town for a funeral. Over the course of the day, they come together once again, and Sean leaves again. The story fast-forwards two months, and Sean is pulled into a case that Charlie is working on. These three simply can’t stay away from each other, and they will have to work through the reasons for Sean’s departure ten years prior before they can potentially have a future together.

Second to its story of second chances is their poly relationship. These three can only exist together. Each of them feels complete when they all live and love together. Throughout much of What We May Be, Reyne is insistent on a variety of relationships. This book is a strong advocate for LGBTQA relationships, and you’ll find diversity in this story. And...it feels right.

Besides the second chances and the poly relationship, what this book is really grounded in is romantic suspense. There are crimes to be solved in this book. Reyne takes much of the book to reveal the killer, and I’ll admit that she keeps you guessing. There is quite a bit of a bait and switch with the killer of this story. In hindsight, I should have figured it out easily. Reyne doesn’t make it too hard, but she causes you to focus on other characters as the killer so that you forget. In fact, I think this is the greatest strength of her story.

Now, where did I struggle? There are a lot of characters in What We May Be, and I found myself at times forgetting who a particular person was. I found this to be overwhelming, and it detracted at times from the main characters. However, this may be more my issue than Reyne’s complicated characterizations.

From a stylistic standpoint, I appreciated the multiple points of view in this book. It allows Reyne to direct the chronology of the story well.

For my first read of a Layla Reyne book, I found What We May Be to hit all of the things that make for a compelling romance. Emotional, exciting, and erotic, this book is the perfect weekend read.
