Though the novel was a bit slow at the start, it certainly picked up after page 45! I’m not a regular mystery reader, but I enjoyed this classic as it is both approachable and short. Part two was a wild ride. I know mysteries are supposed to keep you guessing, but I was expecting neither
murderous Mormons
nor
a cross-continental revenge plot
. It’s quite a convoluted tale, but I enjoyed it anyway.

This is the first book was the world is introduced to the infamous Sherlock Holmes. In his first full adventure, Sherlock makes a grand entrance into the world of crime-solving, along with the help of the good Doctor Watson. He makes his way through the plot with confidence and intellect that baffles the best and brightest of Scotland Yard.

I enjoyed the lengthy explanation of how Holmes figures out the riddle that is the murder. It was so interesting to watch the growth of friendship between him and Watson, and the amount of frustration that he causes to Scotland yard. It's wonderful when an author can create an intelligent character and not have to say 'look he's smart' but can just show the reader through the story.

I liked the story.  And it was very well written.  The characters were written with great care.  They had a slight but visible development, and it fit.  It was nice and at the same time interesting to see the beginning of the collaboration between Holmes and Dr.  Watson.

A fun first book for sure, I can see why the public would've been so obsessed in the late 1800s. I don't have a lot of thoughts on the story otherwise, but I did rather like that the second bit gives us the murderer's full story and motive, even if some less observant readers found it a bit confusing.
