This book was EVERYTHING! It took me on a journey of emotions and opened my mind to perspectives I had never thought of before. I couldn’t put it down. So so good!!

Very graphic but also one of the best books I’ve read this year. Would have felt much better about it  though if it was written by a Hispanic woman

So Tragic, but so wonderfully written, yet completely heartbreaking. What so many go through just to be treated as American dirt. Wow. This is a novel but no doubt the stories are so similar to those who flee from Mexico from the danger of poverty, imprisonment to the dug Lords, and even threats to their lives and/or their families lives. Wow. This one left me awestruck.

A good concept but wrapped in silly Liftime movie style drama that just struck me as too unrealistic and obnoxious to continue. Main character was likeable, but the author wrote like she had never met a child before. The “wise beyond his years” child trope was just too unbearable, the kid is supposed to be 8.

American Dirt is a novel by Jeanine Cummins that sheds light on the rough life of Latinas in their own land, forcing them to leave via choosing the death journey. They run away from the cartels violence to the land of the free, where they are not welcome! This results from discrimination, which must be uprooted by educating people that the only difference between humans is their actions (being a vile or a good person), not color, religion, and race that don't reflect the individual's personality. Thus ‘To deny people their human rights, is to challenge their very humanity - Mandela’ and ‘Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts - Margaret Mead.’

I liked the book more than I expected. It was fast-paced and vivid, however not easy to read at parts. Trigger warning - rape.
I did get a little nudge while reading - how accurate is it? What's the authors connection and motivation? After finishing the read I did a little research and apparently there are many Mexicans who are not happy with the author and the book itself. Not because of harshness but of the lack of authenticity. Still, if you are not bothered by author being an "outsider" and the possibility of stereotypes woven into the plot, it is probably not a bad read for both thriller lovers and Hosseini fans.
