I really enjoyed this. Overall it is just a fun comic book about a superhero just trying to do superhero things. It's not trying to change the face of comics forever. All it is really trying to do is keep the reading entertained. I did have some gripes, like it felt like it was missing something, and that the story was flimsy at times, but still a really good comic.

It was ok. I had read that the DeCONNICK comics were supposedly what they based her character off of in the movie so I curious as to if it was true or not. Honestly I really couldn’t tell after reading this. As this was my first Captain Marvel comic I probably should have read her other Captain Marvel series first. It’s not that it was hard to follow I just think there was probably some more of Carols origin in them.

Captain marvel trade by Kelly Sue DeConnick trade 1. This has a very entertaining story, with a very good rhythm between the fun and the serious topics. The art is also quite good. And the guest appearances by the Guardians of the galaxy are also very nice.

the only slight downside is that the story builds upon another story which I think is from the Avengers, but I'm not that far along in the avenger story to already know what exactly happens. But this is a minor point because with some deduction you get the gist of what happened and you don't really need more then that to understand this story.

Very entertaining, on to trade 2.

Had a little trouble getting into the plot, but it was still pretty fun! Loved all of the characters in this, they were so good, especially Carol.

This is a trimmed down version of my review, to view the full review visit The Book Ramble.

In the first volume of the new Captain Marvel series we see Carol Danvers heading out across the galaxy to try and save the Nowlian people, now living on Torfa, from a hostile takeover by the Spartax. Captain Marvel and her new Nowlian companions first build a fleet and then face off against J'son and his fleet. This volume guest stars the Guardians of the Galaxy and some of the Avengers.

I didn't know much about Captain Marvel when I picked this up but...oh my...read this! If you're looking for an ass kicking female lead, and supporting crew, this is definitely a great place to look. I loved the plot, the writing, the art, the characters. Everything in this series is amazing. I didn't read DeConnick's previous Captain Marvel series but I think I might just do it after reading this.

The plot to begin with is interesting. I liked that Carol isn't just doing her job, she's doing what she thinks is right. She's saving this race, not because she has to, but because she loves them. I think it's great that there were so many elements involved in everything. I liked that this was a story where the plot didn't revolve around needless violence but on compassion and care for other people. Carol Danvers and her friends did something really awesome. All the plot flows well, works well, is smooth, makes a lot of sense, and doesn't really require a lot of background knowledge. DeConnick gives you what you're missing. Once in the form of an adorable crayon drawing about Carol's origin story, adorable!!

I think DeConnick has molded a really amazing character in Carol Danvers. First of all she's amazingly fierce. Just a straight-up badass. She takes on an entire fleet on her own! This kind of strength is amazing, but it's not necessarily physical, it's a strength of will. She's being strong for an entire race of Nowlians because they can't be for themselves. It's pretty amazing. On top of this she's hugely compassionate and caring. I think she's fairly complex. She has this deep longing for something beyond what she has on Earth, which leads to this little adventure.

Okay so, to sum all the fangirling up: READ THIS. It's so good!

Is it wrong that my favourite moments typically involved Chewie the cat? Of course, Captain Marvel is a bad ass, powerful hero, but there's something about bringing her cat with her into space that makes her so much more endearing to me.
I thought this was a great "start" to her story. We get a lot of great character development from Carol Danvers, layered in subtly, artfully, so that her personality is never an aside to the story.
This volume has some appearances from other great Marvel characters, which is fun. Marvel's greatest strength is the scope of its connected universe, so I always love when characters cross paths.
There was little doubt that I was going to enjoy this. My only complaint: the political aspect of the plot was fine, but not my favourite.

Only in the Air Force would this kind of attitude be tolerated. But if it prevents genocide I guess it has its merits.
