I loved the idea and the premise of this novel, and the author did some really interesting things - such as make her fantasy world a different planet, instead of parallel universe - that I really appreciated. But there were some flaws in the writing that I struggled with. The dialogue felt stiff and too formal, plus there were a lot of times when the explanations for things felt a little too stiff as well. I was being told too much instead of learning it through the writing. This book has a lot of potential, and I hope maybe the author improves with later works.

The Lost Heir by Andi O’Conner is book one in The Dragonath Chronicles. In The Lost Heir we meet a young man named Darrak. He dreams of a world similar to Earth but with a purple sun and a world of magic. One day he wakes up to find his world changing and he sees a vision of what is to come. The sun is now purple and there are violet clouds that traverse the skies. He foresees the destruction that is to come when the planet begins to fail as the now hotter sun creates changes in the environment that will affect all that beneath its gaze. Not long after waking to see the changes beginning to happen on Earth a sorcerer from another planet shows up and tells Darrak that he is one who can save both worlds but he must learn to harness and channel the magic that he has inside him and that he must come with him to learn, develop and grow. Upon leaving Earth Darrak learns a sad truth that breaks his heart but there is nothing that he can do now. But even in this new world Darrak’s life is in danger and he is being hunted but there is more to him that most don’t know and must be kept secret until the time is right. But there are many power hungry players who will do anything to acquire control and rule not just that world but Earth as well.
The Lost Heir is a unique fantasy story that grabs you and pulls you in. We are introduced to a variety of characters that engage you at every turn. We are introduced to Darrak who is connected to Dragonath a world that he has never been to or heard of before. But now he must go there in order to save both Earth and Dragonath from those who wish to conquer them all. However, those that Darrak are going up against are trained warriors and sorcerers and while he needs lots of training time are not on his side. He must prepare to go up against a Princess who craves more power and who will do anything to acquire that and that includes murdering her own family and those who serve her if she must. There are characters that discover that they are more than what they thought they were and that they are essential to the coming fight and that all must survive if they are to win.
The story flows seamlessly from each character detailing the paths that they are each taking and even the minor characters play big roles in how the story unfolds. There is danger as Darrak must learn about meno and how to harness it. His friends Ipzaag, Anarra and a couple others must be strong to help him. Anarra, Darrak and another learn that they have unique powers and skills that have not been seen in thousands of years and the pieces begin to all come together as they and their enemies realize that they are all essential to defeating the Organization. There are traitors all around them and they must move with caution. There is no way to know how many traitors there are or who they are in their midst but soon they will reveal themselves.
This book has betrayal, romance, and danger at every turn and heartbreak. There are close calls of where death seems eminent only for it to be thwarted just in the nick of time and there are revelations that will surprise you. There are so many unique elements in this story that it will keep you turning page after page until the very end and then leave you wanting more. I honestly cannot wait to continue this series to find out what happens next. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and will definitely be adding it to my collection and continuing the series when I’m able. Well done to the author.
