Every essay was charged and never lost momentum. Some essays are more dense than others, but I was encouraged to take my time with each of Boyer's sentences. The way she writes about the body, the world, poetry, and art with unflinching honesty, clarity, curiosity, and silliness is inspiring.

It felt like a drink of water so I read it too fast. I don't know yet how to live while incompatible with the world(without conforming and without divesting completely) and she seems to be doing it in this book and in her career.

i really struggle to get poetry. after stumbling across boyer's poem "what resembles the grave but isn't" earlier this year and feeling kicked in the gut for the first time by a piece of poetry, i had to check out her backlist. i figured since this is more essay collection than poetry collection, it could work well for me. but unfortunately a lot of this went over my head. it's very intertextual, and i missed a lot of the references. i did really love her writing and perspective when i was able to grasp it, but mostly this just isn't the format that resonates with me

I was pleased to see this collection of lyric essays, poetry, etc. by Anne Boyer released as an audiobook. I own a print copy but had never gotten around to reading. Fascinating, necessary work, especially those on refusal and on being a sick woman. Lyric essays on illness are my raison d'être.
