Loved the premise and liked the connection between the three storylines but this really fell apart at the end. The twist is dumb and there’s no reason for
welland to be the villain. His motivation is never explained and feels sloppy.
also the r*pe scene at the end was SO unnecessary ?? Like truly no point for it to be in the story at all.

This is hands down my favourite read this year. I couldn't put it down and didn't see any of the twists coming. I won't do a detailed review because I think this book is best to go into blind, but DAMN.

Not entirely sure why the author is so obsessed with the gender binary; “he or she”, “him or her”, “male or female, it was hard to tell with the hoodie”, “man or woman, it was too dark to tell”. Just say “them”, “they”, “person”, “figure” etc, it's 2023.

Quite a bit of fatphobia as well, and an unnecessary rape scene that literally just existed for shock value.

Completely chilling in every sense of the word, the relentless pace and plot twists of varying impacts mixed with an excellent use of mini-cliffhangers makes this an absolute page turner and in terms of story and atmosphere possibly the best thriller I’ve read this year.

I wish there were more
whistlers in this story! I found them so fascinating. That they are not dead people (zombies) but just infected. Different but still people. Though I wish they rose up against the Retreat. I wanted more gore and more whistler-lore. That's the only thing lacking. Also I think Daniel/Sean/Carter's mission was idiotic. Wanting to kill the Professor. Maybe it would have been better if he was searching for Eva's father. That would have made more sense. His killing everyone was so weird. Anyways, the book wasn't perfect but I was really entertained. Read this book in two days when I finally picked it up.
