This was great! I really enjoyed reading it and it got me out of a mini reading slump. Danica and Samael were fun to read about, with lots of sexual tension and amusing dialogue. The plot was tightly woven. The book wrapped things up nicely but left a few threads for book two, which I'm excited to read when it releases next month! 4.5 stars.

4.5 stars. Honestly I enjoyed this. Samael is a little too domineering for me but I mean, I guess it's to be expected. He is a demon. I enjoyed Danica's portions of the book more, and I really liked the world-building and seeing it get fleshed out. This book takes place in a world where portals opened and released supernatural creatures and now humans and supernaturals mix. There are demons, witches, fae, werewolves, etc. It was pretty well done, enough to make me excited for the next one.

A 3.5 Star Story.⭐️💥
Speak of the Demon: Deals with Demons, Book 1
By: Stacia Stark
🎧 Audiobook Narrated By: Amanda Leigh Cobb
Length: 8 hrs and 19 mins
📖 Ebook Read Using Kindle Unlimited

This was a good audiobook. I liked the narrator. She had a good range of voices and held my interest throughout.👏

The mfc, Danica, is a bounty hunter. She's only got a trickle of power. She's trying to find whoever m¥rdered her mum. During a chase and interrogation, her suspect gets 'offed' by an arrow!😳 More troubling is the fact that it happens in the most powerful demons territory.

He demands a payment, especially when he discovers she has a blade she stole from him 6 months ago.🙈 So he places a demon bond on her. He has someone m¥rdering demons and wants her help to find and despatch them all. She's given 2 weeks to complete it, or she stays his!😱

This was a decent read and listen. I really liked Vas.😍 There's obviously a lot more to her heritage than we've learned.

I don't think I'll continue with the series. I wasn't invested enough, unfortunately.

Why is this actually a good book though, I fully had low expectations as it was free on stuff your kindle day. I actually am annoyed that I like it because I for sure will be reading and buying more of this series. I thought it had a good amount of lore/history, character building, and tension. I was a bit annoyed I didn’t get more of the romance banter but I feel like that is what is sucking me into the next book. The only thing I hate is that there are four more books to this series and I’m not sure I’m THAT committed.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed it (the demons, the worldbuilding, the mystery) but I strongly disliked how arrogant/controlling/alpha male the lead was.

I discovered Stacia Stark's "Kingdom of Lies" series when I was looking for things to read after ACOTAR/Fourth Wing. I ended up really enjoying that series and finally decided to check out some of her previous work while I wait for the last book in that series to come out in May. I was also looking for some sort of palate cleanser after reading a lot of very plot-heavy, intense series for several months now. I was looking for something I would find to be a little lighter, yet was still well-written enough that it wouldn't annoy me to read. That's been a major problem that I've been having ever since discovering this genre. I find that with this genre, it's either really well-written, or it's really shitty. There's not much in between. The problem for me with finding a quality series, is that I get super invested in the story, and then it can be draining if this is your genre of choice and all that you feel like reading, which is the case for me currently. If I try to read something that maybe could use some work plot-wise, while I'm not as emotionally invested in those stories and get a break mentally, the quality of writing usually pisses me off because of poor editing or poor grammar, or super annoying main characters, and I can't stomach it, so I stop reading.

I thought I would give these a shot because I did enjoy "Kingdom of Lies" so much (although her first book wasn't as strong, all the rest were wonderful), and I enjoyed her writing style in that series. I don't really read urban fantasy, so I already wasn't expecting to like these as much, but I was hoping that her writing would be strong enough that I could read these for a bit of a breather, in between other heavier series. If I'm rating on the same standards that I do any other book on here, considering plot and storyline, characters, writing style, etc.--it's meh. It's definitely not her best writing, and her plot and storyline development has nothing on what she does in "Kingdom of Lies". This book has lots of plot holes; things are definitely rushed at certain points in the book, particularly the ending. Character development isn't as good as it could be, and there's lots of opportunities on development of the dialogue and dynamics between characters as well. There is always a chance that the books in this series will continue to improve, (I'm not sure if this was her first attempt at writing or not) because that was the case with "Kingdom of Lies" as well, but, even compared to the first book of that series, the writing there was much stronger than it is here.

Despite the flaws, the writing and story are still good enough that it makes for an enjoyable experience for me. I'm also listening to this via audiobook, and I really appreciate the fact that Amanda Leigh Cobb is narrating this series. I've come across her work before in the ACOTAR books and find her to be very talented. She does an excellent job with putting a voice to the FMC's headstrong personality and smartass nature, and elevates this book for me, much more than would've happened if I would've just read it. The FMC is very strong-willed and makes lots of sarcastic quips, so I found her to be entertaining, for the most part. Although, her temper often gets the best of her, to the point where she puts herself in danger and you start wondering if she has a death wish, and that can be annoying. If was rating this book based on what I personally was looking for, which was, essentially, "a decent enough palette cleanser" rather than the writing itself, this book hit its mark and I will be continuing this series for that purpose.
