Wow I didn't know the phantom of the opera and Oscar Hammerstein did a collab!!

This is bad–racist, ableist, convoluted, ridiculous, etc. If you are expecting an actual sequel to Phantom of the Opera, no, you should not read this. But if, like me, you went through a bizarre Love Never Dies phase as a teenager and you're open to reading an absolute garbage fire of a sequel...this is fun. The audiobook production is actually really good and immersive, so that is the way I would suggest consuming this story because it is not worth the energy it takes to read with your eyeballs.

It has been a number of years since I read The Phantom of the Opera, so don't feel able to comment on the accuracy of characters etc.

I enjoyed the first third of this, and felt that Madame Giry's opening confession set up the story well. But I found there were too many points of view for the plot to flow properly. Disappointing.

I wasn't sure what to think of this book at first. Its story was kind of choppy with all the narratives that are each chapter, but the ending was magnificent. It was suspenseful and was all built up and I loved that. I can tell that 'Love Never Dies' will probably be loosely adapted as was 'Phantom', but its something I would like to see. I was glad to see that Erik was doing so well for himself but, I felt Erik's pain much throughout the book. I enjoyed the 'continuation' of my favorite twisted love story.

Who in their right mind would allow an author to pervert and trample a classic the way Forsyth has done with this sorry excuse for a "sequel"?

Serves me right, anyhow. I'm rarely impressed by sequels.

It seems to me that he [Forsyth] marketed this one to readers who are totally oblivious to the existance of Leroux's novel, and who have latched on to the idea that "the play" is where it all began.

The lesser liked but I think slightly more palatable of the offensive Phantom of the Opera retellings. This one is slightly better than Susan Kay's fanfic, in that it twists the characters from their original personalities less, but still awful. Skip all of them and stick to Leroux's original.

So I actually read this book because I found out it was the source material for Andrew Lloyd Weber's Love Never Dies. Let me tell you, I have some opinions. This book was SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than the plot of LND. Barely ANYTHING from this book made it through to the finished musical - basically just the idea that the Phantom went to New York and opened up a park on Coney Island. The whole Pierre thing (re-named Gustave? for some reason?) was so much more ambiguous in the musical as well. This book was SO MUCH BETTER. While the plot was a little convoluted, and there were some choices that confused me, overall the book was fun! I'm not a huge fan of the musical, but I am a much bigger fan of this book.
