Don't have a lot to say, just a beautiful, straightforward story that had me teary-eyed toward the end. It's short and fast-paced, perhaps a bit too fast sometimes, affecting emotional resonance, but definitely worth a read if you love books involving animal protagonists.

An emotional war story told through the perspective of a horse. A very good book for children in secondary school to tell the horrors of war in an age-appropriate manner. Some good visual discriptions, and an interesting concept for narrating a war story. But not enough time to grow attached to characters and sometimes it doesn't make a lot of sense as to where the characters are.

This book is utterly devastating. It's about a lot of things: war, friendship, grief, love... but it all comes together to make something beautiful. I cried so much reading this. Telling it from Joey's perspective rather than from a soldier's was a brilliant idea on Michael Morpurgo's side. He wanted to show the universal suffering of war, and he did. He demonstrated it perfectly.

I picked this up because I vaguely recognise the author's name, but don't particularly know anything about their writing. This is a well written children's historical, but I found the viewpoint just a bit beyond my ability to suspend disbelief, particularly as there is apparently no language barrier for the horse.

There are some pretty flights of fantasy; some of the story might be accurate (the author's note at the beginning indicates this is the story of a real horse), but there are sections that have to have been made up wholecloth, because they fill in the gaps between what is known and what isn't.

The resolution is a bit flat, but then it is war, and so many people die. And horses.

I mean it’s war horse. It’s a classic. If you don’t love it, do you have a soul?

I’ve seen the film, i’ve seen the play at the national theatre, i’ve read the book and i cried and loved them all. A wholesome WW story, i’m not one for a war story but really it’s all about the pure bonds between man and animal and how our bonds are what get us through tough times.

It does deal with tough themes, but really it’s a great intro to war and conflict without being too vivid but not sugar-coating too much. Allow your kids to talk through this book because I had some very formative talks with my parents over this book and really helped understand these themes throughly.
