Grades 3-6. I wish the story could have been a bit longer, and more of Clayton's mom's story was included. But it was sweet and interesting.

Interesting that I read this immediately after I read Kwame Alexander's Solo, both with music as a foundation of the narrative. I agree with others who say the wrap up of this one might seem a bit abrupt; the amount of time describing the time on trains became a bit frustrating. I really did feel angst for poor Clayton; for some time, it seemed that no one at all could understand him.
As with Alexander's book, I feel this is best accompanied by some music. Williams-Garcia does give some nice background at the end of the book.

I give this novel 4 1/2 stars total. 4 for the book itself but 5 for the audio version because it really adds a richness to this musical book.

Oregon Battle of the Books Read #5
I think I would have gotten more out of this one if I would have read it physically instead of reading it.

A sweet story of grief, family, hope, and knowing what means the most to you and finding a way to hang on to it.
