this was a total nostalgia read. i read it in 5th grade. i currently have the flu so i thought it would be an easy read to get my brain working again. and it was everything i remembered it being. its so unapologetically dorky and nerdy. reminds me of myself in elementary school lol. but it's such a fun read.

This was a fun read with lots of great literary references that made me laugh out loud several times. I will be recommending this Mark Twain nominee to kids who enjoy books, puzzles, and games. Loved it! (Seth, can we do this in our library, please??)

A fun and interesting book. Gave this a pre-read before having my 7 year old read it. I'm excited for him and think he'll love it. He likes puzzle books and mystery books and this is a little of both. I also like that kindness and sportsmanship are rewarded in this book and the opposite has consequences. Those are good lessons for my son to read about.

Fun library-based adventure for those who enjoy puzzles and deduction. Had a lot of parallels with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, character-wise and action-wise.

Re-read 7/2023: I read this in 2016 but didn’t realize there were more than 3 or 4 books now, so I wanted to re-read the series from the start. I think the first will always be my favorite just because it’s so innovative and engaging. I loved it even re-reading it as an adult, and have recommended it to a lot of people - and can’t wait for my son to read it!

Originally read 6/2016: I was sucked in to this book from the beginning - books and riddles and codes and a super-cool library?! I’m in. It was a really good story, and I appreciate how it will get younger kids, especially those who aren’t readers and are more into games, into reading. There were book titles and references galore in this book, so it was fun to place those. It reminded me of Book Scavenger.

Audiobook with the boy on our commute. Lots of title dropping in this scavenger hunt game made it fun for mom. Well-read son recognized a lot of them as well. Fairness and teamwork are major themes, and some diversity makes me kinda buy it. Always up for a book for kids NOT about a white boy and his minority sidekicks, but so it goes.

Wow I got through this book quickly. It feels like I just picked it up. Anyway, it was like a weird mix of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Night at the Museum meets Ready Player One. My biggest issue with this book was that the group of twelve year olds were too freaking smart. For not having a library in their town they sure knew a hell of a lot about books and libraries. It was so unrealistic that it kept pulling me out of the story. Either way, it wasn't a bad book. I would recommend it to someone about twelve years old. It's kinda like a G rated Ready Player One with the prize of knowledge and reading.

A fun read which teaches children about the library. Good read-alike for Charlie and Chocolate Factory, The Westing Game, and Chasing Vermeer.

Great fun story. I loved all the book references. Wish the game was real and I could play it!!!
