Sem palavras. Que livro incrível. A melhor parte foi ter lido parte dele enquanto estava no Chile (que mesmo nunca tendo sido mencionado diretamente, obviamente é o país de Violeta)

I feel rotten giving this just 3 stars, maybe 3.5. I know Allende is a beloved author and maybe I should have started with something else. While I loved the historical aspects - the story ranges from the Spanish flu pandemic to the outbreak of the COVID pandemic - the narrator’s voice seemed dry and not terribly engaged. There were great moments strung together by one piece of world history to the next. It felt more like reading a textbook than a personal narrative.

Couldn’t stand the cynical, ignorant narrator. That might’ve been the point but it makes the entire book was a collection of negative attitudes and emotions

“Sometimes our fates take turns that we don’t notice in the moment they occur, but if you live as long as I have they become clear in hindsight. At each crossroads or fork we must decide which direction to take. These decisions may determine the course of the rest of our lives.”

Violeta Del Valle have lived a century where she has survived and seen wars, economic downfall, political movement, outbreaks - basically watched the world changes.

It's a letter written by Violeta who wrote in detail and not ashamed to tell her story, her relationships and even show how flawed she was as a human. I loved her relationship when she was growing up and it breaks my heart when she outlived them as she cherished them so much. You will ended up cherishing them as well.

Such a breathtaking historical fiction I've read this month.
