This book was work. It was hard to follow. I very much enjoyed some lines and sections like when Eliza (main character) talks about what it means to be an older unseen widow. Also when she sees her own flaws near the end. Also Bogel’s story and the part about enslaved people in Jamaica was worth reading.

I could not resist literary historical fiction set (mostly) in London by one of my favorite writers. I felt this did drag a bit at times, but I ultimately enjoyed it and found the history behind the story especially compelling.
